Appendix — The Flint Family of Greetham, Rutland and Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire

As mentioned in the Introduction to this work, attempts to establish the parentage of the George Flint of the title have found a plausible, if unproven, solution in the birth of one of this name in 1763 at Greetham, Rutland. We here present a setch of the latter’s family. It will be noticed that three of his brother William’s children, John Flint (II), William Flint, Jr., and Elizabeth (Flint) Scales, all moved to Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire, and that William later moved to Holbeach nearby (indeed so many Flints left Greetham that there was no-one of the name left there in 1881). This is one reason for believing that their uncle, George Flint, may also have gone to Holbeach. Other support for the proposed identification includes the similarity of naming patterns in the two families, and the fact that John Flint of Gedney Hill and George Flint of Holbeach were both carpenters.

The information from the parish registers of Greetham, which as of 1989 had not been microfilmed, is taken from a transcription.[1] All dates prior to 3 September 1752 are Old Style and have not been converted, but the years according to moden reckoning are supplied in square brackets.

This appendix has been much improved since its first appearance by the contributions of Mr. Andrew Jones, whose wife is a direct descendant, and who provided all of the photographs.

1. John1 Flint, of Greetham, Rutland, still alive in 1763, was probably the John Flint who was buried 18 Feb. 1778 in Greetham churchyard. He m. by 1744,[2] Ann ____, living 1763. No will for him or his wife, or letters of administration on either of their estates, has been found.[3] Known issue, all baptisms in Greetham parish church (this listing being probably somewhat incomplete):

  1. 2William Flint, bapt. 16 Sept. 1744.
  2. Ann Flint (twin), b. 18 July 1746, bapt. privately 10 Aug. following, the privacy of the ceremony possibly signifying that she and her twin sister were sickly. No further record has been found of either of them.
  3. Mary Flint (twin), b. 18 July 1746, bapt. in the same circumstances as her sister Ann.
  4. Elizabeth Flint, bapt. 13 March 1748[/9]. She m. 26 Jan. 1778 in Greetham parish church, Thomas Mould. Only known child:
    1. Ann Mould, bapt. 22 Nov. 1778, of whom no further record has been found.
  5. John Flint (II), bapt. 15 May 1752, of whom no further record has been found.
  6. Matthew Flint, bapt. 31 Dec. 1754, apparently still alive in 1797. He was almost certainly the Matthew Flint of King’s Cliffe, Rutland, who m. 13 Dec. 1792 in Greetham parish church, Mary Sturges, who was in turn possibly the Mary Flint who m. 31 Oct. 1803 at King’s Cliffe, Richard Groom. No children of this couple were baptized at Gedney Hill, but their son Matthew was baptized 6 July 1797 at King’s Cliffe. No will for him or his wife, or letters of administration on either of their estates, has been found.[4]
  7. Sarah Flint, bapt. 11 Oct. 1760, of whom no further record has been found.
  8. George Flint, bapt. 10 July 1762, of whom no further record has been found at Greetham; possibly this was the George Flint who m. Elizabeth Lee and founded the Flint family of Holbeach.

2. William2 Flint, of Greetham, son of John and Ann (____) Flint of the same place, was bapt. there 16 Sept. 1744, and was still alive in 1790. He m. 20 April 1772 in Greetham parish church, Elizabeth Bull, living 1790. No will for him or his wife, or letters of administration on either of their estates, has been found.[5] Three of their children went to Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire, but it is not known whether they were taken there by their parents, or went there by themselves. However, just as the name Flint vanished from Greetham, it also had vanished from Gedney Hill by 1881. Known issue, all baptisms in Greetham parish church:

  1. John Flint (II), of Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire, carpenter, bapt. 31 Jan. 1773, d. (intestate) 10 March 1860, “aged 88 years” (sic), at Gedney Hill. He m. 6 Oct. 1800 in the parish church of Gedney Hill, Rebecca Lehair, bapt. 12 June 1780 at Gedney Hill, d. 1806, daughter of Benjamin Lehair, of Fleet Fen, Lincolnshire, farmer, by his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson.[6] He m. (2) 30 March 1807 in the same church, Catherine Green, b. in 1762-63, d. 21 Dec. 1841, aged 78 years at Gedney Hill, “of old age.” He m. (3) (as her second husband) 21 Nov. 1842 in the parish church of Fleet, Lincolnshire, Sarah (Briggs) Creek, b. in 1785-86 at Parson’s Drove, Cambridgeshire, d. 23 June 1854, aged 68 years at Gedney Hill, “of old age.” widow of ____ Creek, and daughter of John Briggs, a shoemaker. John Flint was at Gedney Hill by 1800. In the record of his third marriage, which names his father, he is called a carpenter and widow, of Gedney Hill, and his wife is called a widow, of Fleet. In 1851 he and his third wife were living at West Drove, Gedney Hill, where he was working as a farmer and carpenter. The person who informed authorities of his third wife’s death was John Creek, of Fleet Fen. Known issue, all by first wife:
    1. Rebecca Flint, bapt. 31 May 1801, d. young.
    2. Mary Flint, bapt. 29 Aug. 1802. She m. 27 May 1822 in the parish church of Gedney Hill, Charles Wright. There do not seem to be any children recorded for them in the Gedney Hill baptismal register.
    3. Sarah Flint, bapt. 25 Dec. 1803, d. by 1805.
    4. Sarah Flint, bapt. 8 Sept. 1805. She m. 29 Dec. 1823 in the parish church of Gedney Hill, Anthony Hoving. There do not seem to be any children recorded for them in the Gedney Hill baptismal register, and they do not appear in the 1851 census of the town.
  2. Ruth Flint, bapt. 2 Oct. 1774, of whom no further record has been found.
  3. William Flint, Jr., of Gedney Hill, a cordwainer [shoemaker], bapt. 6 Oct. 1776, living 1820. He m. (as her second husband) 10 Aug. 1801 in the parish church of Gedney Hill, his sister-in-law, Sarah (Lehair) Thorpe, bapt. 9 June 1778 at Gedney Hill, living 1820, widow (with issue) of John Thorpe, and daughter of Benjamin Lehair, of Fleet Fen, Lincolnshire, farmer, by his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson.[7] William Flint was of Gedney Hill by the time of his marriage in 1801, when he is called a shoemaker, and his wife of Fleet Fen, but they were as of Holbeach by 1820. William Flint does not however appear in the 1851 census or either place. His wife was a residuary legatee of her uncle Jacob Lehair, and after the death of his wife received the rents and profits from a land and shop at Whaplode Drove until her sons Jacob Lehair Thorpe and John Thorpe reached the age of 21, after which she received an annuity of £10 from them.[8] Known issue:
    1. Lehair Flint, bapt. 29 July 1804 at Stamford St. John, Lincolnshire, of whom no further record has been found.
    2. William Flint, bapt. 26 Sept. 1806 in the parish church of Spalding, Lincolnshire, living 1881. He m. before 1853, Elizabeth ____, b. 1815-16 (aged 45 in 1861) at Holbeach, Lincolnshire, living 1881. He appears at no. 5 Trinity ____, St. Botolph without Aldersgate, London, in the 1861 census, in which he is called a lithograph roller maker and his wife a laundress.[9] He appears as a lithograph roller maker and printer in the 1881 census, at 11 Hare Court, London, with his wife (a laundress) and their two youngest children.[10] Known issue:
      1. William Flint, b. 1842-43 (aged 18 in 1861) at London, living with his parents in 1861 but not in 1881.
      2. George Flint, b. 1844-45 (aged 16 in 1861) at London, living with his parents in 1861 but not in 1881.
      3. Eliza Flint, b. 1845-46 (aged 15 in 1861) at London, living with her parents in 1861 but not in 1881.
      4. Sarah Lehair Flint, b. 1852-53 at London,[11] d. young.
      5. Sarah Lehair Flint, b. 1855-56 (aged 5 in 1861). We know her complete name was Sarah LeHair Flint from the index to marriages in the October-December quarter of 1874 in the City of London, Middlesex, vol. 1c, p. 57, but we cannot determine the name of her husband therefrom.
      6. Elizabeth Flint, b. 1857-58 (aged 3 in 1861, 3 in 1881) at London, still living unmarried with her parents in 1881.
      7. Alfred Flint, b. 1860-61 at London (aged 6 months in 1861), still living unmarried with her parents in 1881, when he was a warehouse man.
    3. George Flint, bapt. 26 June 1809 in the parish church of Spalding. See note at end.
    4. Sarah Flint, bapt. 3 Oct. 1815 at Skirbeck, Lincolnshire.
    5. Daniel Lehair Flint, b. near Holbeach, bapt. 16 May 1820 in Holbeach parish church, d. at Holbeach shortly before 27 July 1820, when he was buried in Holbeach churchyard.
  4. 3George Flint, bapt. 15 March 1778.
  5. Elizabeth Flint, of Gedney Hill, bapt. 22 Aug. 1779, living 1851. She m. after 1799, ____ Scales, who d. by 1851. Elizabeth Scales appears in the 1851 census as a widowed pauper, living at West Drove, Gedney Hill, next door to her brother John Flint. Only known child:
    1. (illegitimate) William Flint, bapt. 10 Aug. 1800 in Greetham parish church, living 1871. We have not discovered a marriage for him, but he was a widower in 1871, when he appears as a lodger at the “Winchilsea Arms,” Greetham, and is called a carpenter.[12]
  6. Sarah Flint, bapt. 8 July 1781. She m. 9 Jan. 1804 in Greetham parish church, Samuel Ashton. Known issue, all baptisms in Greetham parish church:
    1. Elizabeth Ashton, bapt. 18 May 1806, of whom no further record has been found.
    2. Sarah Ashton, bapt. 9 Sept. 1810; no further record.
    3. Eleanor Ashton, bapt. 1 Nov. 1812; no further record.
  7. Matthew Flint, bapt. 28 Sept. 1783, of whom no further record has been found.
  8. Ann Flint, bapt. 5 June 1785. She m. 12 Oct. 1807 in Greetham parish church, Thomas Broughton. Only known child:
    1. James Broughton, bapt. 26 April 1812, of whom no further record has been found.

3. George3 Flint, son of William Flint and Elizabeth Bull, was bapt. 15 March 1778, d. 21 Oct. 1856, aged 78 years, and was buried in the parish churchyard of Teigh, near Greetham. He m. 8 Jan. 1811 in Greetham parish church, Ruth Winterton, bapt. 14 April 1782 in Greetham parish church, d. 19 Jan. 1861, aged 78 years, and buried with her husband, daughter of John and Naomi (____) Winterton, of Greetham. George Flint was of Gedney Hill by the time of his marriage in 1811, and he and his wife were of Long Bennington, Lincolnshire, by 1816. In 1819 they and their three sons were removed from that place, as they had become indigent and were not natives of the parish.[13] Known issue:

  1. George Flint, Jr., b. in 1811, bapt. 27 Oct. 1811 in Greetham parish church, d. 3 Sept. 1858 in Lebanon Tp., Saint Clair Co., Illinois, aged 47 years (see his mother’s tombstone). He appears as an unmarried man in the household of William Flint in the 1850 census of Lebanon Tp., Saint Clair Co., Illinois.[14] While one might naturally expect this man to have been a brother to the head of the household, he is recorded as two years older than William’s brother of this name, but as the right age (as it happens) to have been the head’s cousin, George Flint, son of William Flint, Jr. Whoever precisely this George Flint of Saint Clair Co. was, he was pretty surely the same George Flint who d. by 1860, having m. (as her second husband) Dec. 1852 in Saint Clair Co.,[15] Elizabeth (Gedney) Frost, b. 1810-11 at Cowbit, Lincolnshire, d. ____ in Lebanon Tp., Clinton Co., Illinois, widow (with issue) of William Frost,[16] sister of the Mary Gedney who married William Flint of Lebanon Tp., and daughter of William Gedney and Rebecca Wright. His widow, as Elizabeth Flint, m. thirdly 5 June 1860 in Saint Clair Co., Illinois,[17] Joshua Eastwood.[18]
  2. 4Matthew Flint, b. in 1813-14, bapt. 21 Dec. 1816 at Skillington, Lincolnshire.
  3. 5William Flint, b. in 1816, bapt. 21 Dec. 1816 at Long Benington.
  4. James Flint, b. 1822-23, d. 19 Jan. 1880 at Braunston, aged 57 years, and buried in Teigh churchyard.

4. Matthew4 Flint, son of George Flint and Ruth Winterton, was b. in 1813-14, bapt. 21 Dec. 1816 at Skillington, Lincolnshire, d. 12 July 1873 at Bishop Burton, Yorkshire, aged 59 years, and was buried in Teigh churchyard.[19] He m. ca. 1837, Mary Ann Bentley, d. 1892, third of the seven children of Thomas Bentley, of Kilnwick, by the latter’s wife Mary Mason. Matthew Flint is called a servant in the 1839 birth record of his daughter Maria. The 1861 census shows Matthew Flint as a tea dealer, living at Church Street, Beverly, Yorkshire; his daughter Maria was then a sempstress. By 1881 his widow Annie was living at Main Street, Bishop Burton, as a grocer, together with her daughter Maria. They had three known children:

  1. Maria Flint, b. in 1839, d. unmarried in 1915.
  2. Thomas Flint, b. 23 Feb. 1841, d. 1910.
  3. George William (“Will”) Flint, b. 6 Oct. 1848 at Bishop Burton, d. in 1929 at Bridlington, aged 81 years. The 1881 census shows him as a wholesale provision merchant living at 62 Morpeth Street, Hull. His first wife was Mary Ann Hewitt, daughter of a saddler from Market Rasen. They were married at Wycliffe Congregational Church, Hull. They had three children before Mary Ann d. in 1887 at the age of 37 of breast cancer. His second wife was Jane Purdon, from Driffield; they married in 1890 but are not believed to have had children.

5. William4 Flint, son of George Flint and Ruth Winterton, was b. in 1816, bapt. 21 Dec. 1816 at Long Benington, and d. 21 March 1878 in Lebanon Tp., Saint Clair Co., Illinois, aged 61 years (see the combined tombstone of his brothers James and Matthew).[20] He m. 21 March 1842 in Cowbit parish church, Mary Gedney, said to have been born 15 June 1815 (but her age is given as 38 in the 1850 census), daughter of William and Rebecca (Wright) Gedney, of Cowbit, and granddaughter of John and Ann (Baker) Gedney. At the time of his marriage he was a coachman. They emigrated soon after, settling in Saint Clair County, Illinois, where he became a prosperous farmer, and they raised a large family. William Flint, aged 35, born in England, was enumerated in Lebanon Tp., Saint Clair Co., in the 1850 census, in which he is called a farmer; a George Flint, aged 41 years, was then a member of the household (see note at end).[21] Known issue (all born in Saint Clair Co.):

  1. Mary A. Flint, b. 1842-43 (aged 7 in 1850).
  2. Edith Flint, b. 16 Feb. 1845, d. 10 Nov. 1898, aged 53 years, 8 months, and 24 days. She m. 19 Sept. 1873, the Rev. Leonidas Worthy Thrall, a Methodist minister, b. about 1851. She was the subject of a long and informative obituary, which reads in part (with editorial additions from the Thrale family website):
Vandalia District Methodism mourns. At one o’clock Thursday morning, November 10, death came to the home of our beloved presiding elder, Dr. L.W. Thrall, and took away his wife…. Funeral services were held in the Chapel of McKendree College at Lebanon, Illinois, Saturday, Nov. 12th, at one o’clock p.m. It was singularly fitting that the funeral services should be held in this place. Her father was one of the staunchest supporters and most devoted friends of the college. Her brothers, Geo. W. and John W., and herself, are graduates of the college. Her husband graduated here in ’72. Her daughter, Edith L. [1874-1950], took her degree here in ’95. Three of her sons, V.W. [Victor Worthy Thrall 1877-1963], W.F. [William Flint Thrall 1880-1941] and C.H. [Charles Haven Thrall 1883-1968], are now entered as students here. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery in Lebanon. Her husband, a daughter and four sons, her mother, and two brothers, Geo. W. and the Rev. John W. Flint, our pastor at Belleville, and a great throng of friends mourn her …. Edith Flint, daughter of Wm. and Mary Flint, was born in the vicinity of Lebanon Feb. 16th, 1845. When a little girl she was converted to God at a camp-meeting, on old Shiloh camp ground. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was from childhood a very active worker. Her early life was spent in or near Lebanon…. She attended the Lebanon Seminary, and when women were admitted to McKendree college, in the fall of 1869, she entered as a senior, and graduated the following June. She was the first woman graduate of this noble institution. She was the leader in the organization of the Clionian Literary Society and wrote the first constitution of that organization. She had previously taught school in country districts and after her graduation taught one year in the public school of Lebanon. On September 19, 1873, she was married to Rev. L.W. Thrall. As his helpmeet and inspiring supporter in his work, she accompanied him to Freeburg and Pinckneyville, this conference; Hartford, Columbus and Independence, Kansas; then back to Illinois to Ashley, Grayville, Metropolis, Salem and Greenville. Since Bro. Thrall was appointed presiding elder of Vandalia district she resided two and a half years at Salem and a little over the same length of time at Lebanon. Sister Thrall was active in all the departments of church work…. She was also connected with the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union…. Sister Thrall has written a number of beautiful poems, which have had a wide circulation. She was “mild and gentle” in her disposition; cheerful, hopeful, trustful. She was unselfish and seemed to forget herself in her interest in others. She was an unusually gifted woman. Her mind was stored with knowledge so that to converse with her was not only a source of interest but also of profit. She has been a severe but patient sufferer for twenty-three years from asthma and bronchitis. Because of these afflictions she was kept from mingling with her fellow-beings in the activities of life…. She departed this life November 10, 1898 aged 53 years, 8 months and 24 days.[22]
  3. George Flint, b. 1846-47 (aged 3 in 1850), d. 1926.
  4. John W. Flint, b. 1848-49 (aged 1 in 1850), d. 1926.
  5. James G. Flint, b. about March 1850 (aged 6/12 in September 1850).

Probably also of this family

George Flint, b. 1824-25 , who appears as George Flint, aged 25, laborer, born in England, in the 1850 census of Lebanon Tp., Saint Clair Co., Illinois, but he seems to have been living with unrelated persons at the time and the record provides no clue as to his parentage.[23]
