George Flint Hockley, of Uxbridge Tp., Ontario Co., Ontario
George Flint Hockley, son of Daniel Hockley and Mary Ann Flint, was b. in 1857-58 near Uxbridge, d. 1934, aged about 76 years, and was buried in Uxbridge Cemetery. He farmed on the third concession of Uxbridge Tp. He m. (1) 7 March 1888 in Uxbridge Tp.,[1] Isabella (“Bella”) Nesbitt, b. 1864 in Ireland, d. 1930, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (____) Nesbitt. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents without however supplying the mothers’ maiden surnames, both parties were residing in Uxbridge, and the groom was a farmer; the groom was a Methodist but the bride a Presbyterian, and it is not clear by what rites the ceremony was conducted; the witnesses were Annie Stevenson and Albert Hockley, both of Uxbridge Tp. It will be noticed that their family of thirteen children included three sets of twins, and that six of his children lived to be over 80 years of age. He m. (2) (as her second husband) in 1930 or later, Mrs. Badgerow, a widow.[2]
- Albert Edward Hockley, b. 18 Nov. 1888, d. 25 April 1970, aged over 81 years, and buried in Zephyr Cemetery. He m. 1917, Jessie S. Walker, b. 24 April 1894, d. 19 March 1976, aged over 81 years, and buried beside her husband. They farmed in Scott Tp., Ontario Co. (now part of Durham Region), Ontario.
- Francis Hockley, b. ____, in July 2009. He m. (1) in 1944, Kathleen Rae. They lived at Sandford, Scott Tp., Ontario Co. (now part of Durham Region), where he owned “Scott Bus Lines.” He was a board member of the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society. He m. (2) in 1985, Betty Boose, who d. in April 2009.
- Lois Hockley, b. 31 Dec. 1946. She is living (1985) at London, Ontario, where she works for the Westinghouse Corporation.
- Laura Hockley, b. 22 June 1954; m. 1973, Halis Yazaroglu, b. 25 Oct. 1950. They were living in 1985 at Mississauga, Ontario, where her husband worked as a repairman in an auto-body shop, but have resided in Newmarket since the 1980s.
- Dora Yazaroglu (twin), b. 24 June 1974.
- Olga Yazaroglu (twin), b. 24 June 1974.
- Naomi Hockley, b. 14 Feb. 1922, d. 18 Jan. 2007, aged nearly 85 years. She m. 1949, Joseph Green, d. 1995. They lived in West Palm Beach, Florida, where her husband was a real estate agent. Naomi currently (2006) lives in a nursing home in West Palm Beach, Florida.[3]

- Michael Green, b. 1971, d. 1995. He has a son, Calen Green, b. 1988.

- Preston Hockley, b. 14 May 1924, d. in Nov. 1999. He m. 1950, Etta Weller, b. 15 May 1920, d. 4 May 2006. He and his wife owned a bus company. They were living in 1985 at Zephyr, Scott Tp., Durham Region, Ontario. Only child:
- Patricia Hockley, b. in Nov. 1955, unmarried. She received a B.A. honours in Geography from Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, in 1978. She is now (1985) an assessor for the Newmarket Government Offices.

Melvin Hockley, b. 9 Jan. 1928, d. 7 Jan. 2004, aged nearly 76 years. He m. 9 Oct. 1948 at Zephyr Missionary Church, Ruth Keller, living 2006. He was a real-estate agent until about 2000. He and his wife farmed at Zephyr for 23 years, and built a home on part of farm in 1971. They moved to Gorham Street, Newmarket, Whitchurch Tp., York Co., in 1981. His widow, who has contributed to this chapter, is now (2010) living at Newmarket, Ontario L3Y 8V5. Issue:
- Gary Austin Hockley, b. 1950. He graduated from Waterloo University with an Honours B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 1974. He worked for Proctor and Gamble until his retirement in 2006, and now (2010) lives in the Stouffville area. He m. in 1976, Valerie Smith, from Montreal. They have two children:
- Louise Alison Hockley, b. 1978. She graduated from Guelph University in Early childhood Education. She m. in 2003 at Grace Church, Newmarket, Darryl Simon Hume. They are living (2010) at Newmarket. Only child to date:
- Owen Simon Hume, b. 2009.
- Glenn Austin Hockley, b. 1980. He graduated from Seneca in Computer programing. He m. in 2009 at Grace Church, Newmarket. Jennifer Marie Clements. They are living (2010) at Newmarket.
- Sherryl Dianne Hockley, b. 1953. She graduated from Women’s College Hospital as an R.N. in 1974. She m. in 1974 at Holt Free Methodist Church, Wayne Bruce Andrews, b. 1951. They were living in 1985 at Newmarket, Ontario, where she was working as a nurse and he owned a carpet business. They are now living (2010) at Sidney, B.C. She owns her own bakeshops in Sidney and Victoria, and her husband is with United Carpets in Sidney. Children:
- Christopher Ryan Andrews, b. 1978, unmarried as of 2010. He is living (2010) at Vancouver, B.C.
- Michael Tyler Andrews, b. 1979, unmarried as of 2010. He is living (2010) at Sidney, B.C.
- Marie Ruth Hockley, b. 1957. She graduated from Herzing Institute as a Medical Secretary. She m. in 1976 at Zephyr United Church, but was subsequently divorced from, Eric Stephen Kerr. They were living in 1985 at Barrie, Ontario, where her husband owned a carpentry business. She now (2010) lives at Couquitlam, B.C., where she works in the local hospital. Children:
- Jennifer Robin Kerr, b. 1977. She m. in 2000 at Sandals in the Dominican Republic, Bradley Vincent. They now (2010) live at Tillsonburg, Ontario. Children:
- Griffin Donald Vincent, b. 2003.

- Jeffery Stephen Kerr (twin to Craig), b. 1978. He m. in 2003 at Christ Church, Kettleby, Ontario, Marcia Jean Elder. He is a York Regional Police Officer. They are living (2010) at Newmarket, Ontario. Children:

- Craig Michael Kerr (twin to Jeffery), b. 1978, unmarried as of 2010. He is a store manager at Markham, Ontario, and is living (2010) at Keswick, Ontario.
- Daisy Hockley, b. 29 Sept. 1931, d. by 2003. She m. 1950, Charles Crone, d. by 2003. She worked for the York County Board of Education, and her husband was a real estate agent. They were living at Sharon, East Gwillimbury Tp., York Co., in 1985. Her sister, Elsie Playter, informed us in 2003 that they were both deceased. No children.
- Elsie Hockley, b. 28 Dec. 1935, living Dec. 2003. She m. 1956, Wray Playter, d. in 2004. They were living in 1985 at Newmarket, Ontario, where her husband was a partner in the firm of Roadhouse & Rose, morticians, until his retirement.
- Lynn Playter, b. 1957. She m. in 1991, Elliott Atkins. Issue:

(1) 9 June 1915 at Scott Tp.,[4] Anne Risebrough, b. 1896 in Scott Tp., d. 24 June 1922, daughter of John Risebrough and Adeline Pegg. At the time of their marriage, in the record of which her surname is spelled Riseborough throughout, he was a farmer, of Uxbridge Tp., and she was of Scott Tp.; the witnesses were Jessie M. Riseborough of Sandford and Wilmot Bain of Zephyr. He m. (2) in 1922 or later, Helen Armstrong, b. 1904. They farmed on the fourth concession of Uxbridge Tp.

- Douglas Raymond Hockley, b. in April 1930, killed 6 May 1951 in an automobile accident, dying unmarried and v.p.
- Clara Marie Hockley, b. ____; m. ____ Jones. They are living (1985) at Thornhill, Markham Tp. Three children.
- Donald Grant Hockley, b. 10 May 1934 in Uxbridge Tp. He m. 7 Nov. 1959, Gladys Shirley Wells, b. 19 June 1936. They are living (1985) at Bowmanville, Ontario, where he is a district manager with the Miracle Food Mart Division of Fireco Sales.
- Stephen Bradley Hockley, b. 19 Nov. 1960; m. 24 Nov. 1979, Mary Ellen Kilpatrick, b. 25 Aug. 1961. They are living (1985) at Bowmanville, where he owns a landscaping company.

He m. 3 April 1916 at Claremont, Pickering Tp., by Baptist rites,[6] Ada Margaret Ball, b. 1893-94 (aged 22 in 1916) at London, England, daughter of Richard Ball and Sarah Manning. At the time of their marriage, the record of which supplies the full names of both sets of parents including the maiden surnames of the mothers, the groom was of Uxbridge, and the bride of Claremont, Pickering Tp. They farmed at Fielding, Saskatchewan. They are thought to have had four children, but only two are known to us, the order being uncertain:

- Muriel Irene Hockley, b. 30 March 1925; m. 18 June 19__, Roland Donald Young.[7] They are ranch farmers near Coboconk, Victoria Co., Ontario; their postal address (1985) is R.R. 1, Kirkfield, Ontario. Two children.
- Wilfred Ross McKenzie Hockley, b. 16 Sept. 1934; m. ____, Barbara Young.[8] They are farming (1985) at Oakwood, Ontario, and their postal address is R.R. 1, Oakwood. No known children.
- Levi Hockley (twin), b. 11 Oct. 1897, d. unmarried and v.p. 1 Nov. 1918, of influenza. He farmed his father’s land in Uxbridge Tp.
- Elizabeth Hockley (twin), b. 11 Oct. 1897, d. the same year.
- Gordon Hockley, b. 30 Oct. 1899, d. s.p. ____; m. 25 June 1924, Leona Pickett, b. 11 Oct. 1902, d. ____. He farmed in Uxbridge Tp. until his retirement, then moved to Uxbridge Town.
- David James Hockley (twin), b. 1 Nov. 1901, d. unmarried 16 May 1983, aged over 81 years, at Uxbridge. He was a member of the Uxbridge Tp. council from 1932 to 1936,[9] and a member of Uxbridge United Church. He farmed his father’s land on the third concession of Uxbridge Tp. until his retirement to Uxbridge, when he sold it. He spent his last days in Daheim Nursing Home there.
- Charlotte Elizabeth Hockley (twin), b. 1 Nov. 1901, d. between 16 May 1983 and Dec. 1986, aged at least 81 years, at Mt. Albert, East Gwillimbury Tp., York Co., and buried in Mt. Albert Cemetery. She m. (1) ____, Jack Albert Walker, b. 31 Jan. 1888, d. 29 Oct. 1968. She m. (2) ____, James Kennedy, d. ____. She and her first husband farmed on the western townline of Uxbridge Tp., near Mt. Albert in East Gwillimbury Tp., York Co. She and her second husband lived at Mt. Albert.

We follow her and her twin sister Margaret’s birth registrations in placing Sarah first, and the date of their births as 2 Jan. 1904, rather than 2 Jan. 1903 as we were informed by a family member. She m. ____, Walter Warren, d. ____. They farmed in Scott Tp., Ontario Co. (now in Durham Region), near Mt. Albert in East Gwillimbury Tp., York Co., until their retirement to Newmarket, Whitchurch Tp. Four children.
- Margaret Alice Hockley (twin), b. 2 Jan. 1904,[11] d. 1982. She m. (1) ____, Clarence Bell. She m. (2) ____, William Clark. She and her second husband lived at Toronto after their retirement. Children, both by first husband:

- William George Hockley, b. 5 March 1906, d. s.p. __ June 1978 at Toronto. He m. (1) ____, Ethel Heimeller. He m. (2) ____, Martha Heimeller. He worked for Loblaw’s and for the Toronto Dominion Bank, both at Toronto. His first wife was from Chesley, Ontario. It is not known whether his two wives were related to one another.
