Mary Ann (Flint) Hockley, of Uxbridge Tp., Ontario Co., Ontario
Mary Ann Flint, daughter of Matthew and Mary (Naylor) Flint, of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and later of Stouffville, Whitchurch Tp., York Co., Ontario (see Chapter 16), was b. 18 July 1833 at Wisbech, d. 12 Aug. 1880, in Uxbridge Tp., Ontario Co. (now part of Durham Region), Ontario, and was buried in the Friends’ Cemetery, Quaker Hill, near Uxbridge. She m. 15 Oct. 1852 in Markham Tp., by Congregational rites, as his first wife, Daniel Hockley, b. 25 Aug. 1826, apparently at or near Clavering, near Stanstead Mountfichet, Essex, d. (testate) 27 Sept. 1893, and buried in Uxbridge Cemetery (having m. (2) Mary (____) Hart, without further issue), eldest son of William and Elizabeth (Glasscock) Hockley, of Wendon Lofts, near Saffron Walden, Essex, and later of “Green Valley Farm,” near Uxbridge.[1]
Mary Ann Flint was brought by her parents to Stouffville, and was still living with them in 1852. The witnesses to her marriage were William Stewart, a schoolteacher, of Uxbridge Tp., and her cousin Richard Henry Parsons, of Markham Tp.
On 8 July 1858 Daniel Hockley purchased from his father “Green Valley Farm,” near the road from Goodwood to Uxbridge Village; it lay on the west ½ of lot 19, concession 5, Uxbridge Tp., and included, if not originally then by 1877 (but no longer in 1893), the west ½ of lot 20. He left this land to his youngest son, Albert. Daniel and Mary Ann Hockley were Episcopal Methodists, and later (after church union in 1874) Canadian Methodists.
After Mary Ann’s death in 1880, Daniel Hockley married a second time. In his will, dated 10 March 1893, in which he styles himself a yeoman, Daniel Hockley leaves to his wife all his household furniture, a cow, and a buggy, and, so long as she remained his widow, an annuity of $160 and the use of the house. He enjoins his son Albert to cut firewood for her and care for the cow, stipulating that he shall have the calves for his trouble. He also leaves to him all the rest of his personal and real estate; his description of the farm mentions only the land in lot 19, so that apparently he had already disposed of that in lot 20. His appoints as executors his wife, his son Albert, and his son-in-law George Nelson Gerrow. The witnesses are Thomas W. Chapple, barrister, of the Town of Uxbridge, and his wife Lucy. Daniel Hockley left real estate valued at $3000, and personal property worth just under $1125.
Aside from the children shown below, Daniel and Mary Ann (Flint) Hockley may also have had a son Thomas, who died in infancy.
