Chapter 13
Mary (Flint) Campbell, of Calgary, Alberta
Mary Ada Flint, daughter of George and Mary Rose (Teed) Flint, of Stouffville, Whitchurch Tp., York Co., Ontario (see Chapter 4), was b. in 1868-69 at Toronto, and d. 31 Jan. 1927, at Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, aged about 58 years. Ada Flint was raised at Stouffville, and in 1880 or early 1881 was taken by her parents to Toronto, where she is found with them in the 1881 census.[1] By 1888 she m. Joseph William Campbell, who d. 1921, probably at Hollywood. Her husband had had a variety of jobs in Toronto, as well as a partnership in the short-lived dry-goods firm of Campbell & Mossman (1891). He was a contract agent for the Incorporated Light Company (1894), then in 1895 he joined Canadian General Electric, for which he worked first as a traveller, then as a sales agent (1903-07), and finally as a department manager (from 1907). It is said that when he left General Electric he became a purchasing agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1896 or 1897 William and Ada Campbell went to live at 86 and 88 Rose Avenue, two of her family’s houses, but they moved to 92 Glen Road in 1902. By 1905 they also had a beautiful summer house called “Minota” at Jackson’s Point, a resort on Lake Simcoe developed by people from Stouffville, which was the site of W.B. Sanders’ “Lakeview Hotel.”
When Ada’s sister Ida Bruels died in 1897 leaving her young daughter Winnie motherless, William and Ada Campbell took her in and raised her as their own. About 1909 they moved to Calgary, Alberta, their son Norman remaining behind but apparently joining them later. There William Campbell worked as an officer of the Calgary Cement Company. On his retirement they ultimately moved to Hollywood, Los Angeles, where her brother Matthew was living with his family. The 1930 census states that their sons Austin and Kenneth were naturalized in Pennsylvania in 1918 and 1920, respectively; probably the dates should be the same but one or more of them was reported incorrectly. The entry for their son Irving in the 1930 census further corroborates the place of naturalization as Pennsylvania, although the date is obliterated.
