WHITTINGTON

This sketch is adapted by kind permission from the much more extensive treatment of this family in Stuart Hill, Hill–Froggatt–Whittington … Family Tree, available online at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=sah1717, who kindly brought his work to our attention, and his contributor, Mr. Glenn Trezza, of Boston, Massachusetts. We give here only the direct ancestal line of Martha Whittington, wife of Henry Buxton. Although there are numerous places named Whittington in England, it seems likely that in this instance the family’s surname derived from the Whittington lying in the north of Derbyshire, in the hundred of Scarsdale, near the Yorkshire border, and very close to the places where this family appears in the seventeenth century.

1. Henry Whittington, of Barnsley, a chapelry in the parish of Silkstone, in the West (now South) Riding of Yorkshire, b. say 1615, buried 1 March 1695 [i.e. 1694/5?] in Sheffield churchyard. He m. 29 June 1640 in the parish church of Ecclesfield,[1] Grace Skargell, bapt. 30 Nov. 1619 in the parish church of Sheffield, daughter of Warren Skargell and Joan Bright.[2] On putting two of his children into apprenticeships as blacksmiths, Henry is described as of Barnsley, gentleman.[3] Issue:

  1. Thomas Whittington, bapt. in 1640 at Barnsley in Silkstone, d. (or buried?) 29 Nov. 1679 at Sheffield. He m. Margaret Smith, and had issue.
  2. 2Warren Whittington, bapt. 20 May 1643 in the parish church of Saint Mary, Barnsley in Silkstone.

2. Warren Whittington, of Ecclesfield, son of Henry Whittington and Grace Skargell, was bapt. 20 May 1643 in the parish church of Saint Mary, Barnsley in Silkstone, as a son of Henry Whittington, and was still alive in 1674. He m. (1) 28 Nov. 1668 in the parish church of Tankersley, Elizabeth Taylor, d. (or buried?) 22 Feb. 1669 [i.e. 1668/9?] at Tankersley. He m. (2) 28 Sept. 1671 in the parish church of Tankersley, Sarah Berrie, said to have been b. at Barnsley aforesaid, d. by 1678. Only known child, by second wife:

  1. 3Isaac Whittington, bapt. in 1674 at Ecclesfield.

3. Isaac Whittington, of Ecclesfield, son of Warren Whittington by the latter’s second wife, Sarah Berrie, was bapt. in 1674 at Ecclesfield, and was still alive in 1711. He m. 29 Dec. 1698 in the parish church of St. Mary, Ecclesfield, Ann Jubb, said to have been b. at Barnsley in Silkstone, also alive in 1711. Issue (all baptized at Ecclesfield):

  1. 4Richard Whittington, bapt. 1700 at Ecclesfield.
  2. Ruth Whittington, bapt. 1702. She m. George Athy, and had issue.
  3. Sarah Whittington, bapt. 1705; no marriage found.
  4. Hannah Whittington, bapt. 1709. She m. John Gothard, and had issue.
  5. Lydia Whittington, bapt. 1711. She m. Thomas Hague, and had issue.

4. Richard Whittington, of Ecclesfield and Rotherham, in the West (now South) Riding of Yorkshire, son of Isaac Whittington and Ann Jubb, was bapt. in 1700 at Ecclesfield, and was still alive in 1744. A Richard Whittington was buried 11 Sept. 1762 from the parish church of All Saints, Rotherham,[4] but as the age of the deceased is not given in the record, we cannot tell if it is relevant. In any case, our subject m. 15 Nov. 1724 in the parish church of St. George, Doncaster,[5] Mary Hartley, bapt. 4 May 1703 in the parish church of Brodsworth, near Doncaster, in the West (now South) Riding of Yorkshire,[6] d. 1781 at Greasbrough, daughter of Joseph Hartley, of Brodsworth, by the latter’s wife Mary Hirst.[7] They lived at Ecclesfield until about 1728, then removed to Rotherham, where their eight younger children were baptized. Issue:[8]

  1. Ann Whittington, b. 7 Feb. 1724/5 in the parish church of Brodsworth,[9] d. 20 Feb. 1727 at Brodsworth.[10] Both records call her a child of “Richard and Mary Whittington of Brodsworth.” She d. by 1738, when another daughter was given the same name.
  2. Sara Whittington, bapt. 11 Feb. 1725[/6] in the parish church of Ecclesfield (IGI); no marriage found.
  3. 5Isaac Whittington, bapt. 18 Feb. 1727[/8?] in the parish church of Ecclesfield (IGI).
  4. Richard Whittington, Jr., bapt. 15 Jan. 1729[/30?] in the parish church of Rotherham. He m. Martha Tibbett, and had issue.
  5. Joseph Whittington, bapt. 5 Aug. 1733 at Rotherham, d. 19 Oct. 1781 at Greasbrough. He m. (1) Ann Smith and (2) Rachel (Cooper) Clayton, having issue by the first wife only.
  6. Benjamin Whittington, bapt. 6 Jan. 1734[/5] at Rotherham.
  7. Mary Whittington, bapt. 8 May 1737 at Rotherham, d. 21 May 1750 at Rotherham.
  8. Ann Whittington, bapt. 25 Dec. 1738 at Rotherham; no marriage found.
  9. Gregory Whittington, bapt. 30 Jan. 1739[/40] at Rotherham, d. 1741 at Rotherham.
  10. Elizabeth Whittington [twin?], bapt. 27 March 1744 at Rotherham. She m. William Willey, and had issue.
  11. Martha Whittington [twin?], bapt. 27 March 1744 at Rotherham. She m. Anthony Dakin, and had issue.

5. Isaac Whittington, of Rotherham, son of Richard Whittington and Mary Hartley, was bapt. 18 Feb. 1727[/8?] in the parish church of Ecclesfield, as a son of Richard Whittington (IGI), and was still alive in 1764. In his marriage record he is called a bachelor, and a smith. He m. 18 April 1751 in the parish church of Rotherham,[11] Mary Smith, b. say 1730, alive in 1764, called a spinster, of Greasbrough, in their marriage record. She named a son Samuel, a name not previously used in the Whittington family, and a Mary Smith, daughter of Samuel Smith, was bapt. 1 Jan. 1730 in the parish church of Rotherham (IGI); but as this Samuel Smith would not appear to have baptized any other children there, it does not seem possible to gain a clearer picture of his family. Isaac Whittingon and Mary Smith are obviously the couple who baptized the following children in Rotherham parish church, although the name of the mother is not stated in any of the records:[12]

  1. Isaac Whittington, Jr., bapt. 30 March 1752; no marriage found.
  2. Mary Whittington, bapt. 12 Aug. 1753. She m. 10 Jan. 1773 in the parish church of Rotherham, by licence,[13] Isaac Wilson, of Ormesby, and had issue.
  3. Anne Whittington, bapt. 9 March 1755; no marriage found.
  4. Martha Whittington, bapt. 28 Nov. 1756, d. aged 70 years, shortly before 13 June 1827, when she was buried in St. Mary’s (Anglican) churchyard, Greasbrough.[14] She m. 3 June 1776 in the parish church of Rotherham,[15] Henry Buxton, of Greasbrough and Masbrough, both near Rotherham, d. aged 78 years, shortly before 28 Sept. 1830, when he was buried with his wife, his age at death placing his birth in 1751-52 (but we have not found a corresponding baptism in the IGI or in the LDS Vital Records Index). She signs her name “Whittinton” in the register. For further details see our BUXTON page.
  5. Benjamin Whittington, bapt. 3 Sept. 1758. He m. 4 March 1783 at Wath-upon-Dearne, Yorkshire, Sarah Cooper, and had issue.
  6. Samuel Whittington, bapt. 16 March 1760. He m. 30 Jan. 1785 in the parish church of Rotherham,[16] Nancy Pollard, and had issue. Their son Isaac Whittington (1798-1870) was a direct ancestor of Glenn Trezza.
  7. Richard Whittington, bapt. 7 Feb. or 7 March 1762,[17] d. same year.
  8. Hannah Whittington, b. 1764 at Greasbrough (per Stuart Hill). She m. 16 Dec. 1782 in the parish church of Rotherham,[18] George Bellamy, and had issue.

7. Joseph Hartley, of Brodsworth (as he is specifically styled in the baptismal records of all of his children), was b. say 1670-75, and was still alive at the death of his wife in May 1743, so he may be safely assumed to be the “Joseph Hartley, labourer” buried 16 Dec. 1751 in the parish churchyard (The Parish Register of Brodsworth, 1538-1813, p. 104). There does not seem to be any record of the baptism of such a man at Brodsworth, although the name was certainly known there before his time. He m. 24 Nov. 1696 in the parish church of Brodsworth (Parish Register of Brodsworth, p. 53), Mary Hirst, who as “Mary wife of Joseph Hartley” was buried 13 May 1743 in the parish churchard (Parish Register of Brodsworth, p. 103). By a process of elimination, she may be identified as almost certainly the one of this name bapt. 3 Dec. 1676, daughter of Robert Hirst (Parish Register of Brodsworth, p. 24), which Robert was probably the one of this name buried 16 Jan. 1681/2 in the parish churchyard (Parish Register of Brodsworth, p. 74); but we have not found a marriage record for him. Known issue, all baptisms at Brodsworth:
  1. Thomas Hartley, bapt. 5 June 1698.
  2. William Hartley, bapt. 8 April 1701.
  3. Mary Hartley, bapt. 4 May 1703, of the text.
  4. Anne Hartley, bapt. 11 Jan. 1707/8.
