John Ashe, of Westcombe & Batcombe, clothier, was probably the one of this name who had a daughter Alice bapt. 22 Dec. 1605 at Batcombe (IGI). Some of the Ashe family of Batcombe were known as “Ashe alias Mercer,” doubtless after their occupation as clothiers.
