Chapter 10
Simeon Flint, of Rochester, New York
Simeon Flint, son of George and Mary Rose (Teed) Flint, of Stouffville, Whitchurch Tp., York Co., Ontario (see Chapter 4), was b. between April 1861 and April 1862[1] at Stouffville, York Co., Ontario, d. 24 Oct. 1950, aged at least 88 years, at Rochester, N.Y., following surgery, and was buried in Hedges Memorial Cemetery, Rochester.[2] Simeon Flint was taken by his parents to Toronto in 1880 or 1881, and was still living with them in 1881, when he was a builder.[3] He m. 23 Oct. 1884 at Toronto, Ontario, the ceremony being performed by his brother, the Rev. Paul Flint,[4] (who had quite likely introduced them), Ella Mary Constance Hatchard, b. 25 Nov. 1861 at Poole, Dorset, bapt. at Wimborne Minster, Dorset (per Hatchard family bible record, but date not stated), d. 3 Dec. 1933, probably at Rochester, daughter of William Fry Hatchard, of Toronto, formerly of Wimborne Minster, by his wife Julia Joyce. The witnesses to their marriage were his brother Ralph and sister Emma, both of Toronto. He and his wife lived for some time in several of the family houses on Rose Avenue, including numbers 86 (1884-5), 89 (1885), 90 (1886-87), 86 again (1888), and 88 (1888-92), which was given as his address at the time of the registration of the birth of his son Albert Gordon. He moved in 1892 (according to the 1930 census) to Rochester, N.Y., where he lived at 52 Avondale Park (which property he left to his eldest child). The 1930 census of Rochester calls him a carpenter, builder, and contractor.[5] He attended a reunion in Toronto at the home of his brother Ralph in 1932.
Simeon Flint was a contractor and builder, served on church boards, and was a deacon in the Methodist church. He outlived all his siblings, dying (it is said) at the age of almost 90 years.
- The Rev. Edgar Martin Flint, b. 12 Aug. 1885 at Toronto, Ontario, d. 30 June 1951 at Madura (now Madurai), Madras Province, India, aged 65 years, and buried there. Edgar Flint received a B.A. from the University of Rochester in 1909 and an M.A. from Columbia University in 1910.[6] He was a research chemist in the U.S. Department of Agriculture for two years. He m. 28 Nov. 1912, Susanna Josephine Quale, b. 1887-88 (aged 21 in 1910) at Madison, Wisonsin, living July 1951, sister of Josephine Quale below, and daughter of Nils A. Quale, of Madison, by his wife Marth Hulda.[7] In 1912 he and his wife were sent by a Congregational Church board in Boston as educational missionaries to Madura, India; and their children were raised there. He set up chemistry and physics courses and taught as a professor at the American College (now affiliated with Madras University), and was Principal thereof from 1935 to 1937 and from 1938 to 1943. According to the present Principal, “He guided the College with wisdom and courage … it was a period of great political ferment and upheaval and [his] sagacity stood the College in good stead.” He was eventually forced to resign the principalship because of failing health, but remained in charge of the Physics department until his death. He was last in Rochester on sabbatical leave in 1946, and his plan to retire there was cut short by his death.

Appendix: Hatchard
The Hatchard family bible record and Simeon Flint bible record, both in the possession of David G. Flint, provide considerable information on this family, which we have supplemented with a few details from other sources:
1. William Hatchard, b. 1791-92 (aged 22 in 1814), living 1834, was of Hasselbury or of Winchester, Hampshire, in 1821 or 1822, at the birth of his son William, but of Wimborne Minster, Dorset, at the baptisms of his (twin?) daughters Elizabeth and Mary in 1831, and possibly of Dorchester, Dorset, at the birth of his son Thomas in 1834 or 1835. On 7 June 1814 William Hatchard, aged 22 years, bachelor, a miller, residing at Alderholt (in the parish of Cranborne), Dorset, made bond (with bondsman William Hayward, gent., of Salisbury) to marry Constance Fry, aged 25 years, spinster, residing at Salisbury St. Thomas, Wiltshire.[17] Constance Fry, b. 1788-89 (aged 25 in 1814, and 80 at death), d. 5 March 1869, aged 80 years, at Southampton, Hampshire, possibly having returned there in her widowhood. In any case, she probably survived her husband as her death is recorded in the family bible record kept by her son William, while his is not. Their known children were:[18]
- William Fry Hatchard, b. 1821-22 at Winchester, Hampshire, of whom further below.
- Elizabeth Fry Hatchard (twin?), bapt. 29 Jan. 1831 at Wimborne Minster.
- Mary Fry Hatchard (twin?), bapt. 29 Jan. 1831 at Wimborne Minster, Dorset, living 1869. She m. by 1850, Edward Henry Warland, b. 1819, d. 1868.[19] Known issue, the first eight being stated to have been born at Wimbourne Minster:
- Constance Fry Warland, b. 1851-52 (aged 29 in 1881). She m. by 1881, Thomas Bessant, b. 1848-49 at Marchwood, Hampshire. They were enumerated at 7 Lower Marsh Lane in the 1881 census of Southampton St. Mary, Hampshire, in which he is called a fireman. Their household included his mother, her unmarried siblings Martin, Leonard, and Belle, and her uncle, Thomas Hatchard.[20]
- William John Warland, b. 1851, d. 1905.
- George Warland, b. 1853.
- Charles Hatchard Warland, b. 1856, d. 1929.
- Martin Hatchard Warland, b. 1856-57 (aged 24 in 1881), a laborer in 1881, d. 1895.
- John Hatchard Warland, b. 1859.
- Leonard Hatchard Warland, b. 1861-62 (aged 19 in 1881), a laborer in 1881, d. 1938.
- George Fry Warland, b. Sept. 1865.
- Mary Julia Warland, b. 1868.
- Mary Warland, bapt. 12 July 1869 at Tarrant Keynston, Dorset (IGI), possibly the same as Mary Julia above. If the date of her father’s death as given above is correct, she may have been a posthumous child. She must be the “Belle,” aged 12, of the 1881 census.
- Thomas Hatchard, b. 1834-35 (aged 46 in 1881), possibly at Dorchester, Dorset (but the statements respecting places of birth for this family in the 1881 census seem confused), a widowed laborer in 1881, when he is found in the household of his niece, Constance (Hatchard) Bessant, above.
2. William Fry Hatchard, b. 1821-22 at Hasselbury (per 1852 census) or at Winchester (per 1871 census), Hampshire, d. 24 April 1875, aged 53 years, at Toronto.[21] He is listed as William Hatchard, age 28, innkeeper, born at Hasselbury, in the 1851 census of Wimborne Minster, Dorset.[22] He m. 13 Aug. 1851 at Tarrant Keynston, Dorset, Julia Joyce, b. 1827-28 at Corfe-Mullen, Dorset, d. 14 May 1890, aged 62 years, at Toronto,[23] presumably the one of this name bapt. 20 April 1828 at Corfe-Mullen, daughter of John and Mary Joyce.[24] William Hatchard is also called an innkeeper in the baptismal records of his children Martin (1852), Kate (1855), Ella (1856), Leonard (1858), and Walter (1860). He and his wife are found at Poole, Dorset, in the 1871 census, in which he is called a draper and pawnbroker.[25] They came to Canada some time in 1871-75 with their seven surviving children, and William died within a few years of their arrival. The widow Julia Hatchard is found in the 1881 census of St. Patrick’s Ward, Toronto, with all of her children except her married daughter Kate.[26] Also living with them were the Rev. Paul Flint and his wife Lizzie, which Paul Flint’s younger brother, Simeon, would three and a half years later marry the widow’s daughter Ella. Issue:[27]
- Martin William Joyce Hatchard, b. 8 July 1852 at Tarrant Keynston, and bapt. there 6 Aug. following, d. 25 June 1883, aged 30 years, at Toronto.[28] He was an assistant to his father in 1871, and was still living unmarried with his widowed mother in 1881, when he was a grocer.
- Kate Julia Jane Hatchard, b. 10 July 1853 at Tarrant Keynston, and bapt. there 14 Feb 1855, d. 16 June 1923, aged nearly 68 years, at Annaadel, Staten Island, N.Y.[29] She was an assistant to her father in 1871. She m. 22 July 1876 at Toronto,[30] John (?) Charles, b. 1849-50 (aged 26 at marriage) at Canterbury, Kent, son of Derkford George Charles and Rachel Maria ——. He was of Toronto and a civil engineer at the time of their marriage. The record giving his name as Derkford George Charles, probably repeating the name of his father in error, as he is listed as “John” Charles, civil engineer, with wife Kate, in the 1881 census of Yorkville, near Toronto, in the 1881 census.[31] They were afterward of Staten Island.
- Ella Mary Constance Hatchard, b. 31 May 1856, bapt. 28 June following at Tarrant Keynston, d. 6 April 1861.
- Leonard Charles Joyce Hatchard, b. 25 Oct. 1858, bapt. 28 Nov. following at Tarrant Keynston, d. 6 April 1861.
- Walter Samuel Joyce Hatchard, b. 6 April 1860, bapt. 15 July following at Tarrant Keynston, d. 1 Sept. 1923, aged 63 years, in the General Hospital, St. Thomas, Ontario.[32]
- Ella Mary Constance Hatchard, b. 25 Nov. 1861 at Poole, Dorset, stated in the family bible record to have been bapt. at Wimborne Minster (but date not given). She was a dressmaker in 1881. She m. Simeon Flint, of the main text.
- Leonard Charles J. Hatchard, b. 23 July 1863 at Poole, and bapt. there in St. James’s Church. He was living unmarried with his widowed mother in 1881, when he was a farmer. At the time of his marriage he was a clerk, of 225 Borden St., Toronto. He m. 29 Sept. 1887 at Toronto,[33] Cecilia Ann Monkman, b. 1856-57 (aged 30 at their marriage) at Bradford, Ontario, but resident at Thornhill, York Co., daughter of George and Elizabeth (____) Monkman.
- Walter Samuel Hatchard, b. 18 Aug. 1865 at Poole, and bapt. there in St. James’ parish church. He was a clerk in 1881.
- Emma Elizabeth Joyce Hatchard, b. 15 June 1867 at Poole, and bapt. there in St. James’ Church, d. in March 1915, aged 47 years, at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.[34] She was a dressmaker in 1881. She m. ____ Fenwick, of Maple Creek.
- (Mary?) Anne Elizabeth Hatchard, b. 24 Feb. 1870 at Poole, and bapt. there in St. Paul’s Church. She is called Mary A. E. Hatchard in the 1871 census, but the family bible record does not include Mary as part of her name, and she is called Annie in the 1881 census.

This bizarrely gives his mother’s name as “Mary Huckabuck,” which looks like a confusion of the names of Mary (Teed) Flint and Charity (Huxstable) Barnes by one of their mutual grandchildren.

Marth Johnson, b. 1852-53 (aged 57 in 1910) in Wisconsin, whose family is said to have changed their surname from Hulda to Johnson. We have not located them in the LDS index to the 1880 census. They were in Minnesota about 1882 at the birth of their daughter Emily, and in Wisconsin at the births of their next three children about 1882-1891, more specifically at Madison at the birth of their daughter Susanna in 1887 or 1888. His name is given as “Nels A.
