Donald William Flint, of Bethnal Green, London

Note: This chapter, which is new to the online edition, is based almost entirely on materials supplied by Donia (Flint) Stick, a great-great-granddaughter of Donald William Flint and Annie Prior. But it has also benefitted from information sent by Tony Malham.


Donald William Flint (I), son of Edward Flint, of Bethnal Green, by the latter’s wife Jane Willesee Deans (see Chapter 13b), was b. 9 Oct. 1849 at Wisbech, and was still alive in 1901. In 1871 he was residing at no. 10 Elwin Street, Bethnal Green, London, and was a cabinet-maker. Donald m. 16 Oct 1871 in St. Peter’s Church, Bethnal Green, Anne (“Annie”) Prior, b. probably in 1853 (aged 28 in 1881, 37 in 1891) at Shoreditch, Middlesex, d. there in March 1894, daughter of Henry Prior, distiller, and the latter’s wife Mary Ann Clarke. The marriage was witnessed by Jane Flint and James Costello. Edward is named as Donald’s father and Henry Prior, Distiller, as Annie’s father. Donald Flint and his wife were still at no. 10 Elwin Street in 1881, living next door to his parents, and he was a cabinet-maker.[1] In 1884 he was employed as a cabinet-maker at no. 3 Albert Mews, Hoxton.[2] In 1891 Donald and his family were living at no. 6 Appleby Street, in the Kingsland Ward of Shoreditch, London, he being again called a cabinet-maker, and his wife a part-fitter.[3] They were living at no. 32 Shap Street, in the Kingsland Ward of St. Leonard, Shoredith, London, in 1901, when he is yet again called a cabinet-maker. London postal directories show him as a cabinet-maker at no. 6 Albert Buildings in 1910, 1914, and 1915. Issue:

  1. Donald William Flint (II), b. 13 Feb. 1872 at Hoxton, Shoreditch, Middlesex, d. 3 Aug. 1929 at Walthamstow, aged 57 years, of injuries after an accident at work involving spilled glue. He was living unmarried with his parents in 1881, when he was a pianoforte maker. He m. in March 1895 at Shoreditch, Middlesex, Alice Upton, b. 9 July 1870 at no. 29 Sidney Road, Homerton, d. 11 Dec. 1954 at Walthamstow, aged over 84 years, daughter of William Henry Upton, a printer’s compositor (of no. 22 Union Street in 1881) and Emma Eldridge. In 1901 they were living at no. 6 Beaconsfield Road, in the St. James Ward of Walthamstow, Essex, and he is called a “pianoforte back maker.”[4] Issue:
    1. Donald (“Don”) William Flint (III), b. 23 April 1895 at Bethnal Green, d. 6 Jan. 1984, aged over 88 years, in Westcliffe Hospital, Westcliffe-on-Sea, of broncho-pneumonia and an osteoporitic fracture of the left femur, and was buried in Sutton Road Cemetery, Southend-on-Sea, Plot D 2918. Donald William Flint III Don is found as an infant in the household of his parents at Walthamstow in the 1901 census. He was residing in 1912-1914 at no. 35 Colchester Road, Walthamstow. He was employed as a pianoforte maker 1914 at F.B. Lamberts Pianoforte Manufacturer, CR, Hampstead. He was employed as a police constable 1914 at Southend-on-Sea, Essex. He was employed as a Military Foot Policeman 1915 at Aldershot. In 1917 he was employed as an infantry man in the Essex Regiment, and in 1918 as a 2nd lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. He suffered illness from Phosgene gas 1918 at Bucquoy. Don m. by 1919, Alice May Brooks, b. 23 May 1892 at no. 2 Albert Cottages, Southend-on-Sea, d. 11 Jan. 1970 at no. 43 Arlington Road, Southend-on-Sea, from left ventricular failure and acute influenzal bronchitis, and buried in Sutton Road Cemetery, Southend-on-Sea, daughter of George William Brooks and Alice Elizabeth White. May, who appears with her parents at no. 2 Burnaby Road, Prittlewell, in the 1901 census, was employed as a powder girl at Kynochtown Powder Works in 1915, and as a waitress at Palace Hotel, Southend-on-Sea, in 1918. She was residing at no. 30 Stromness Road, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, in 1919, at no. 13 Moseley Street, Southend-on-Sea, in 1921, at no. 30 Stromness Road, Southend-on-Sea, in 1923, at no. 16 Belle Vue Place, Southend-on-Sea, in 1931, and at no. 39 Lovelace Gardens, Southchurch, in 1936.       1. Donald (“Don”) William Flint (IV), b. 21 Sept. 1919 at no. 30 Stromness Road, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, bapt. 30 Oct. 1919 in the United Methodist Chapel, Eastern Esplanade, Southend-on-Sea, d. 4 June 2000, aged over 80 years, in Morriston Hospital, Swansea, from cardiac failure, atrial fibrillation, and chronic left subdural haematoma, and buried 12 June 2000 in St. Cynogs, Ystradgynlais. Don was employed as a fireman 1938-1957 at London. At the time of his marriage he was a Section Leader in the National Fire Service. Don m. on 10 June 1942 in Ystradgynlais, Betty Ypres Louvain Kenmure, b. 21 Nov 1914 in Brynwith, Abercraf. She d. 4 Oct. 2004 in Ystradgynlais Community Hospital from metastatic carcinoma and carcinoma of duodenum, and was buried 15 Oct. 2004 in St. Cynogs, Ystradgynlais, daughter of William John (“Jack”) Llewellyn Kenmure and Gwladys James. She had been employed as a Probationer Nurse 31 Dec 1932 - 31 Dec 1934 at The Hospital For Women, Soho Square W1. She was residing in May 1937 in 20 East Street, Blandford, and in Sept. 1937 with her mother at 21 Is-y-rhos, Caerbont. She was employed as a National Fire Service firewoman 1942 in London, and was residing at no. 64 Oakfield Road, Stroud Green, London N4, in 1943. They resided from 1943 to 1957 in Flat 6, 333 Kingsland Road fire station, Hackney. He was employed as a Chief Fire Officer in 1957-1967 at Kampala, Uganda. He returned to live in Wales for a short time and was employed as Chief Security Officer at Dow Chemicals in Sully, Glamorganshire. He then returned to Africa and was employed as a fire officer at Kitwe, Zambia. He was employed as a chief security officer at Ropes & Mattings, Durban, RSA. His wife was employed as a security registrar by the British High Commission at Kampala, Uganda, until 1967. Issue:

Donia Flint, b. 5 Oct. 1943 in Neath Hospital, d. 5 Oct. 1943 in Neath Hospital, of cardiac and respiratory failure and maternal toxaemia, living for only 45 minutes after her birth, and buried at Tynycoed in the Kenmure family grave, which wrongly carries the inscription “Donia Lynne Flint,” the name of her sister.
        2. Donia Lynne Flint, b. 21 May 1949; m. 21 Nov. 1975 at Hornchurch, Essex, Terence (“Terry”) William Stick, b. 27 June 1947 at Hornchurch. Issue:
          1. Donald Gordon William Stick, b. 28 Dec. 1979 at Basildon.
          2. Donia Pauline Stick, b. 22 Oct. 1981 at Canvey Island, Essex.
      2. Ronald (“Ron”) George Flint, b. 6 Jan. 1921 at no. 13 Moseley Street, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, d. 15 Sept. 2004, aged over 83 years, at no. 17 Highcross, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. Ron was employed by the Royal Air Force, and later as a fireman (driver) at Blackpool, Lancashire. Ron m. 18 Aug. 1945 at Blackpool, Jessie Cuttel, b. 19 Aug. 1923 at Manchester. Issue:
        1. Barry Michael Flint, b. 22 July 1949.
      3. Douglas Frederick Flint, b. 17 Nov. 1923 at no. 30 Stromness Road, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Doug was employed as a fireman at London from 1945 to 1957. Doug married Renee ____. In 1957 they emigrated to Brisbane, Australia. He retired in 2003 to 4 Kenzie Court, SG, Brendale, Queensland 4500, Australia. Issue:
        1. Terry Flint, b. 1950.
        2. Alan Flint, b. 1956.
      4. Denys (“Den”) Arthur Flint, b. 6 May 1931 at no. 16 Bellevue Place, Southend-on-Sea. He m. (1) 6 April 1954, Pauline Stevens, d. 1981 at Southend Hospital. He m. (2) Rosemarie ____.
    2. Edwin George Flint, b. 26 April 1897 at Bethnal Green, d. (unmarried?) in Feb. 1994, aged over 96 years, at Holt, Norfolk. He was employed as a corporal in the ambulance squad at Salonica in 1918, and later as a chauffeur at Postons.
    3. Frederick (“Fred”) James Flint, b. 6 July 1899 at Bethnal Green, d. 13 March 1955 in South London. He m. ________, and had issue:
      1. Joyce Flint.
    4. Hannah Alice Flint, b. 26 Jan. 1902 at West Ham, d. 18 Sept. 1995, aged over 93 years, at Newbury, Berkshire. She m. Horrie Ruthven. Issue:
      1. Margaret (“Peggy”) Ruthven.
      2. Beryl Ruthven, alive in 2010. She m. (1) Reginald (“Reg”) Malham. She m. (2) Peter Godfrey, d. in Sept. 1992 in Newbury, Berks. She had the following children, both by her first husband:
        1. Anthony (“Tony”) Malham, a fireman at Colchester, alive in 2010.
        2. Paula Malham, alive in 2010; m. ____ Fairhurst.
    5. Alfred (“Alf”) Harold Flint, b. 21 Aug. 1905 at West Ham, d. 1 May 1988, aged over 82 years, in East London. In 1921 Alf was employed by the Royal Navy. He m. before 1938, Mildred (“Milly”) ____. Issue:
      1. Rodney Flint, b. 23 Feb. 1938.
    6. Harry Flint, b. 31 Jan 1909 at Walthamstow, d. 1 Oct. 1978 at Redbridge. He m. Maisie ____.
  2. Mary Ann Flint, b. about 1881 at Hoxton, Shoreditch, Middlesex, still living unmarried with her parents father at no. 32 Shap Street in 1901.
