DEAN

Announcement: Larry Dean, of Vancouver, Washington, U.S.A., is conducting a Dean Surname Y-DNA Project (see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ladeanxx/dnaresults.htm) to examine connections between groups of Deans in the U.S. and Canada. In March 2005 he located a male-line descendant (his subject no. 1I) of our ancestor John Dean (1754-1827), and further participants are still being sought to confirm the result.

In January 2008, Larry Dean located a Dean (his subject no. 2M) who is a close genetic match to the John Dean descendant, but who on chronological grounds is probably not directly descended from John Dean. Based on information provided by Larry Dean and by the family of the new test-subject, we have started a web page entitled A second Dean line to assist in the exploration of this lineage.

In May 2008, Larry Dean located another Dean (his subject no. 2U) who is a close genetic match to both of the foregoing subjects, and who is descended from John William Dean, b. in 1802 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England. This strongly suggests, therefore, that the present Dean line was of English origin.

Introduction

Our original point of departure in compiling these notes was Cecelia and Roland Botting’s The Deans of Gainsboro Township (hereafter DGT),[1] a booklet of 34 pages which they published some time in the early- to mid-1970s. The present notes incorporate much of this work (including all of the male lines), but do not entirely supersede it. The Bottings clearly had access to the bible record which we reproduce at the end of these notes,[2] as well as other family papers which we have been unable to identify. Unfortunately, our acquaintance with the Bottings began near the end of their lives, leaving insufficient opportunity for obtaining clarification from them of some points of doubt in their work. The copy of DGT owned by the Niagara Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society contains a number of valuable handwritten annotations which we believe to be by the local historian Corlene Taylor. We have incorporated many of these comments and suggestions below.
The first edition of R. Janet Powell’s Annals of the Forty: Loyalist and Pioneer Families of West Lincoln, 1783-1833, 10 vols. (Grimsby, 1950-59), 4:46-9, has a rather weak account of this Dean family, which although improved somewhat in the second edition (19__), 4:54-7, treats mainly of the family of John Dean, Jr., a son of the Lincoln County settlers, rather than the first immigrant generation. This would appear to have been the main, if not only, source, of the brief account of the Dean family in pp. 131-32 of Eugene A. Singer & John Singer, A Singer family of colonial Vermont and Canada, including the Overholt, Staats, Hunsberger, Slough, Will, Hertzel, Terryberry, Dufford, Swackhammer, Snyder, Freas, Moore, Flock, Dean, Boddecker and Dooley families, 3rd ed. (Lahaina, Hawaii: privately published, 2001).

Acknowledgements

This is an ongoing project, for which new material is always welcome. It could not have been accomplished without the contributions of many people, listed here in the order in which contact was first made:

  • Marietta Pickell (not herself a Dean or Flach descendant) who kindly verified for us the marriage record of John Dean and Margaret Flach in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church;
  • The late Peggy (Dean) Teeple, of Sarnia, Ontario, who provided (along with copies of other important documents) a photograph of a daguerreotype (as we take it to be) of Barbara Dean and her husband John Kennedy, in the possession of Joan Gerhardt, of Campbellville, Ontario;
  • Gary Dean, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, who sent material on the family of William Dean and Mary Ann Harley, including a number of photographs;
  • Susan (Rutherford) Bijakowski, who sent material on the famliy of Almeda Dean and Enos Fisher;
  • Charles A. Dixon, who sent information on the descendants of Emery Allen Dean;
  • Heather Roe-Lehman (not herself a Dean descendant), who sent information on the family of Catherine (Dean) Eddy;
  • Lorine McGinnis Schulze, administrator of the valuable Olive Tree Genealogy website (also not herself a Dean descendant), who sent a number of Ontario vital records, which have enabled, in particular, a reconstruction of the poorly-documented family of Thomas Allen Dean and his wife Sarah Ann Whitman;
  • Larry Dean, of Vancouver, Washington, who made me aware of his Dean Surname Y-DNA Project mentioned above;
  • J. Frederick Dean, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, who sent a huge collection of source-material;
  • Lisa J. Schureman, who provided an account of the family of Enos Dean and Diana Cooper.
  • Sally Wadley, a descendant of Lydia Dean and Charles High.

1. John Dean, of Gainsborough Tp., Lincoln Co., Upper Canada (now Ontario), is said to have been b. 1 March 1754, d. 19 Sept. 1827, and was buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard, Gainsborough Tp. As “John Deane” he m. 29 March 1781, in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Germantown (now Oldwick), Tewksbury Tp., Hunterdon Co., New Jersey,[3] Margaret Flach, b. ca. 22 March 1752,[4] d. 6 March 1839, “aged 86 years, 11 months, 14 days” (according to the old Dean family bible record), and buried with her husband in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard, daughter of Andreas Flach, of Flocktown, German Valley (now Long Valley), Roxbury Tp. (in the portion subsquently set off as Washington Tp.), Morris Co., N.J., by the latter’s wife Anna Maria Schüler.
As to the question of where John Dean was before his marriage in New Jersey in 1781, we have found no clue, and unfortunately the New Jersey census returns for 1790 and 1801 are all lost. Considering the date of his birth, one would expect that John Dean would have served in the Revolutionary War; and it is possible he was the Private John Dean who served in Captain Albert Opdycke’s Company of the Second Regiment of Hunterdon County militia (the county in which our subject was married), and also in the State Troops.[5] As he is said by family tradition to have come from Fox Hill, in Roxbury (now Washington) Tp. aforesaid, when he brought his family to Canada in July 1801,[6] there seems no reason to doubt that this man was the John Dean who bought 112 acres of land near Fox Hill in 1783, and sold them to Andrew Shangle in 1801.[7] The original deed of this sale, dated 13 May 1783, for the land and premises, which were purchased of a Conrad Bunn and his wife Mary for £150, gives a very detailed description of the tract, near Tanner’s Brook, but merely describes John Dean as of Roxbury Tp., without mentioning his occupation, and contains no signature or mark from him.[8] A rate taken the following year reveals this John Dean as one of the more substantial freeholders in Roxbury Tp., being assessed 10s. 9d. on 200 acres of “improved land,” with 3 horses and 2 cattle. This man’s household then consisted of 3 whites and no slaves, and this information, so far as it goes, is consistent with our supposition that he was identical with our John Dean, whose first child was born in 1782 and whose second was not born until September of 1784.[9] He is presumably also the John Dean of Roxbury Tp. whose name appears in the 1793 list of Morris County freeholders,[10] and in the list of Morris County militia made in the same year.[11]
John Dean of Roxbury must, however, be distinguished from a closely contemporary John Dean, who baptized five children in the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, Morris Tp., Morris Co., on 23 Oct. 1782; for the birthdates of the latter’s children range between 1772 and 1781, overlapping with those of our John Dean.[12] Other Deans are also found in the Morristown area in the late eighteenth century, but we have not found sufficient data to form a connected pedigree.[13]
John Dean (presumed to be the one of Roxbury) settled with his family on lot 26, conc. 6, of Gainsborough Tp., Upper Canada, which later became part of Lincoln Co.[14] The date of their arrival is traditionally given as July of 1801,[15] which is in pretty good agreement with the entries in the 1842 census for their sons Philip and Andrew, giving their periods of residence in the province as 42 and 41 years, respectively. Other contemporary Deans are found in the vicinity of Gainsborough, but there is no clear evidence of any relationship to them. We do know, however, that Margaret had been preceeded to Canada by her sister, Christina Flach, wife of Andrew Hansel (or Hansler), who had come to Thorold Township by 1799. The name of “Margaret Dean, widow” appears in an 1833 list of the members of Gainsborough Presbyterian Church.[16]
     Known issue:

  1. Mary Dean, b. 30 Jan. 1782, d. 18 March 1864. She m. by 1803, Henry Snyder, b. 12 March 1778, d. 2 May 1850 [or 1849?], son of Adam Snyder, of St. Anns, by the latter’s wife Ann Freas.[17] They settled on lot 18, conc. 6 of Gainsborough. DGT lists eleven children for them. Of these, Margaret Snyder (1815-1896), wife of Ephraim Singer (1814-1867), was the great-grandmother of A. Singer (1921-), one of the co-authors of the Singer genealogy cited above.[18]
  2. 2John Dean, Jr., b. 11 Sept. 1784.
  3. 3Philip Dean (twin), b. 17 April 1787.
  4. Elizabeth Dean (twin),[19] b. 17 April 1787, d. 1872, and buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard. She m. 19 June 1803 (by Robert Nelles, J.P. for Niagara),[20] her sister Mary’s husband’s brother, Joseph Snyder,[21] of Gainsborough Tp., b. 24 Dec. 1780, d. 1866, son of Adam Snyder, of St. Anns, aforesaid, by the latter’ wife Ann Freas. Annals of the Forty, 8:63, lists three children for them.
  5. Barbara Dean, b. 16 June 1791 at Fox Hill, d. 27 June 1864, and buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard. Barbara Dean and John Kennedy She m. 11 Feb. 1816, John Kennedy (III), b. 4 March 1787 in New Jersey, d. 18 April 1874, and buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard, son of John Kennedy (Jr.) by the latter’s wife Charity Wurts (see our forthcoming KENNEDY page). They were direct ancestors of the present writer.

2. John 2 Dean,[22], Jr., of Erin Tp., Wellington Co., and of Cayuga Tp., Haldimand Co., son of John Dean and Margaret Flach, was b. 11 Sept. 1784, and d. 22 May 1858. Our account of his family relies heavily upon his family bible record, reproduced at the end of these notes. He m. 12 Aug. 1806, Anna Mingle, b. 15 March 1790, d. 10 June 1856, and buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard; she was perhaps a daughter of John Mingle,[23] of ____, by his wife Catherine Snyder. The name of “John Dean Jr.” appears in an 1820 list of subscribers in Clinton and Grimsby townships to the building of a Presbyterian church.[24] John Dean first appears in the censuses and assessment rolls of Erin Tp., Wellington Co., in 1826, not being mentioned in that of 1825:[25]

John Dean’s assessements were consistently amongst the three highest in the township. John Dean was himself an assessor in 1832 and 1833. Between 1834 and 1839 (there were no censuses taken between those years) John Dean divested himself of some of his land: the 200 acres of lot 21 in the 2nd concession to his son Thomas A. Dean, and the 100 acres of lot 11w in the 10th concession to his son John. The 1839 census-assessement, listing John Dean “Sr.,” as he is now called, gives his family’ religion as Church of Scotland. The 1840 census entry purporting to be for John Dean Jr. presents a family composition completely incompatible with that given for the son in 1839, and is probably as mistake for the missing household of the father. The 1840 census lists a James Dean, unknown to DGT, in the immediate vicinity of John Dean, and it is possible that this man was an otherwise unknown son of the latter.
It is clearly the family of John Dean Sr. which figures in the following extracts from the early records of Gainsborough Presbyterian Church:[26]

New members
1842 John Dean married man
Ann Dean, wife of John Dean
1843 Thomas Allen Dean, single
      Eliza Dean, single

All four entries are annotated “to Canborough Pres. Church 1845,” indicating that these persons had transferred there, Canborough Township lying in the part of Haldimand County which was later designated the “Monck District” in the 1881 census. However, it is not in Canborough that John Dean and his wife are found in the 1852 census, but rather in Cayuga Tp. North, also in Haldimand Co.; he is called a farmer and the religion of entire family given as Wesleyan Methodists, and living with them were their three youngest sons, Andrew, Ephraim, and William, an Eliza “Deane,” aged 30, who was possibly their daughter Eliza (Dean) Kirby, and an Almeda “Deane” who was perhaps the latter’s daughter, as the two of them are listed together at the end of the entry, after all the sons, although Eliza was older than they.[27] Issue (per bible record):

  1. Matilda (or Mahala?) Dean, b. 12 Feb. 1807. She m. 22 March 1826, Jackson Ismond, and had issue. In 1830 he held 16 cultivated acres and 84 uncultivated acres in the 9th concession of Erin Tp., Wellington Co., and had a household consisting of 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16, no males under 16, and 1 female under 16.[28] Two years later, he is listed in the 1832 assessment of the same township at lot 12 East, concession 9 of Erin Tp., Wellington Co., this time with a household consisting of 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16, no males under 16, and 2 females under 16.[29] We have not located this couple in the LDS index to the 1881 census.
  2. Thirza Dean, b. 21 Aug. 1808. She m. 11 Nov. 1828, John Shingler, and had issue. In 1830 he held 2 cultivated acres and 98 uncultivated acres in the 10th concession of Erin Tp., Wellington Co., and had a household consisting of 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16, and no-one under 16.[30] Two years later, as “John Shungler,” he is listed in the 1832 assessment of the same township at lot 13 North, concesstion 10, with a household consisting of 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16, 1 male under 16, and no females under 16.[31] The also appear in the 1881 census of Erin Tp., which calls him a farmer; her name is erroneously given as Eliza, and her age is slightly exagerated, but the presence of an Absalom Dean in the household would seem to corroborate the identification.[32] Only known issue (per 1881 census):
    1. Wellington Shingler, b. 1844-45 (aged 36 in 1881); still living unmarried with his parents in 1881.
  3. 6Thomas Allen Dean, b. 16 Feb. 1811.
  4. John Dean (III), b. 21 May 1813, living 1871. He m. 7 Oct. 1834, Mary Ann Baker, liivng 1871. Some time between 1834 and 1839 he acquired all of the 100 acres of lot 11w in the 10th concession of Erin Tp. which had been his father’s, for which he was taxed £56/4 in 1839; at the time his household consisted of 1 adult male, 1 adult female, 1 boy under 16 and 1 girl under 16. In 1840 he was taxed £51; the census portion of the record contains an entry supposedly for “John Dean Jr.” but with a completely incompatible family composition, and it is probably a mistake for the household of his father.[33] Clearly therefore John Dean had issue, although DGT does not show any. In the 1871 census John Dean, who is called a farmer, is found with his wife and a daughter, Hannah.[34] We have not located him in the LDS index to the 1881 census. Only known child:
    1. Hannah J. Dean, b. 1851-52 (aged 19 in 1871), still living unmarried with her parents in 1871.
  5. Mary Dean, b. 22 Feb. 1815, not found in 1881 census. She m. 14 March 1837, John Havens, b. ca. 14 Dec. 1815, d. 7 Sept. 1858, “aged 42 years, 8 months, 23 days,” who seems to have been a son of William Havens, Jr., of Grantham and Clinton townships, by the latter’s wife Elizabeth Schram.[35] He may have been the John Havens who settled on lot 2, concession 7 of Caistor Tp., Lincoln Co. Their daughter, Sarah Catherine Havens, b. ca. 11 Sept. 1841, d. 22 Dec. 1861, “aged 20 years, 3 months, 11 days,” wife of ____ Yemen, is mentioned in the Dean family bible.
  6. Israel Dean, b. 1 Aug. 1817, d. 15 June 1818.
  7. Sarah Dean, b. 4 July 1819, d. 13 Sept. 1882, but not found in the LDS index to the 1881 census. She m. 25 Sept. 1838, Jeremiah Hilts, b. 1814-15 (aged 37 in 1852) in Ontario, living 1859, son of Joseph Hilts, of Ballinafad, Erin Tp., Wellington Co., by the latter’ wife Sarah Johnson.[36] She was received into membership in St. Anns Presbyterian Church on 9 April 1843. They were enumerated next to her parents in the 1852 census of Cayuga Tp. North, Haldimand Co., in which he is called a farmer, and the family’s religion given as Wesleyan Methodist; also in their houshold was a William Hilts, aged 25, who is identifiable from the 1988 Durham genealogy as Jeremiah’s younger brother.[37] Known issue (three youngest children, and all marriage data, from the 1988 Durham genealogy):
    1. Sarah Anne Hilts, b. 1838-39 (aged 13 in 1852), d. 1893; m. 12 Oct. 1858 in Elgin Co.,[38] Nelson G. Campell.
    2. Mary Anne Hilts, b. 1840-41 (aged 11 in 1852), d. 1863; m. 1 Aug. 1863 in Elgin Co.,[39] John McKinney. Her surname is given as “Hiltz” in her marriage record.
    3. Eliza Jane Hilts, b. 1842-43 (aged 9 in 1852), d. 1863; m. 9 Aug. 1863 in Elgin Co.,[40] Alvin C. Moss.
    4. Charlotte Hilts, b. 1844-45 (aged 7 in 1852); no marriage shown in Durham genealogy.
    5. Matilda Catherine Hilts, b. 1847-48 (aged 4 in 1852), d. 1893; m. 26 Dec. 1867 in Elgin Co.,[41] Thomas J. Sutherland.
    6. Flora Alice Hilts, b. 1849-50 (aged 2 in 1852); said in the Durham genealogy to have m. Abraham H. Yokom, although there is no such entry in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1886.
    7. Elizabeth Hilts, b. 1852; m. said in the Durham genealogy to have m. George Yokom, although there is no such entry in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1886.
    8. Priscilla Hilts, b. ca. 1854; no marriage shown in Durham genealogy.
    9. James M. Hilts, b. ca. 1859; no marriage shown in Durham genealogy.
  8. Ann Eliza Dean, b. 12 March 1822, d. 15 Oct. 1861. She m. 25 Sept. 1842, Robert Kirby. If she was widowed by 1852, she may account for the Eliza “Deane” (aged 30) and Almeda “Deane” (aged 3) found in her parents’ household in the census of that year. It is also possible that she and her husband had separated, as a Robert Kirby, aged 30, farmer, whose marital status is given as single, appears nearby in the 1852 census.[42]
  9. Martha Catherine Dean, b. 2 June 1824, d. 1 May 1829.
  10. Andrew Dean, b. 27 Dec. 1826, probably living 1871. DGT does not show a marriage for him. He is presumably Andrew Dean was still living unmarried with his parents in 1852, when he was a laborer. Andrew Dean, unmarried, aged 44 years, is found in the 1871 census of Erin Tp., in which he is called a laborer, and is found as a lodger in the house of John Shingleton, a very close neighbor of John Dean (III) above.[43] No Andrew Dean of the right age has been found in the LDS index to the 1881 census of Ontario.
  11. Ephraim Dean, b. 11 Aug. 1829, d. 28 March 1862. Ephraim Dean was still living unmarried with his parents in 1852, when he was a laborer. He m. 17 April 1854, Mahala Vannatter. DGT does not show issue for them, and we cannot find this couple in the LDS transcription of the 1881 census.
  12. William A. Dean, b. 21 March 1832 in Erin Tp., d. 24 March 1886 in Clinton Tp., Lincoln Co., “aged 53 years and 2 days,” of Bright’s disease.[44] He m. 6 April 1857, Elizabeth Culp, b. 1839-40 (aged 41 in 1881) in Ontario. William A. Dean and his wife Elizabeth are found in the 1861 census of Gainsborough Tp. in the household of his cousin William Dean (no. 3.i below); with them were children Henry (aged 3) and Amanda (aged 1). They later appear with four children in the 1881 census of Clinton Tp., he being called a farmer, and the family’s religion being given as Disciple of Christ.[45] His death record also gives his occupation as farmer and religion as “Disciple.” Known issue:
    1. Henry Dean, b. 1857-58 (aged 3 in 1861), no longer living with his parents in 1881.
    2. Amanda Dean, b. about 1859 (aged 1 in 1861, 27 in 1886) in Erin Tp. She is said to have m. (1) ____ Calter. She m. (2) 8 Dec 1886 in Clinton Tp.,[46] her probable kinsman, Robert Burwell Culp, b. 1862-63 (aged 23 in 1886) in Rainham Tp., son of Isaac and Elizabeth (____) Culp. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were resident in Clinton Tp., and he was a day-laborer; her name is given as Amanda Calter, widow, and the witnesses were Aaron Culp and James Dean, both of Clinton Tp.
    3. Dudley Dean, b. 1869-70 (aged 11 in 1881).
    4. John Dean, b. 1871-73 (aged 9 in 1881).
    5. Charles Dean, b. 1875-76 (aged 5 in 1881).
    6. Irvine Dean, b. 1879-80 (aged 1 in 1881).

3. Philip2 Dean,[47] of Clinton Tp., son of John Dean and Margaret Flach, was b. 17 April 1787 in New Jersey, d. (testate) 1872.[48] He m. probably by 1813, Catherine Book, b. 21 Aug. 1791 in the U.S., d. 29 Dec. 1870, and buried on their farm, daughter of Conrad Book,[49] of Grimsby, formerly of New Jersey, by his wife Ann Sophia ____.
Philip Dean was a private in the 4th Regiment of Lincoln Co. Militia in May 1813.[50] He later became a farmer, and purchased lots 12 in concessions 3 and 4 of Clinton Tp.[51] He is listed in the 1828 census of Gainsborough Tp., with a household (including himself) consisting of 3 males over 16, 1 female over 16, 3 males under, and 5 females under; thus he evidently had ten children at that time.[52] He is also listed in the 1842 census of Clinton Tp., with a wife and family of ten children (not named), his farm of 150 acres being part of lot 12 in the 4th concession; he is stated to have been in the province 42 years.[53] The 1852 census shows him and his wife with two of their children, Philip and Jane.[54] His will, proved in 1872, has not been seen by us.
DGT’s treatment of his family is in disagreement with the 1852 census, missing known children and attributing others to him who were born much too late to be his. A more plausible listing is supplied in Annals of the Forty,[55] which is based on information furnished by a direct descendant, Mrs. Emily Book, of Beamsville; this says he had fifteen children, and lists eleven who survived infancy. The family burying ground, a corner of the farm on the rise of the hill east of Beamsville, known as the Quarry road, was transcribed in 1961, and the present compiler has a copy thereof in his possession.[56]
Following Annals of the Forty, his children (apart from four who died in infancy) were:

  1. Margaret Dean, b. 18 June 1812, and buried at St. Anns. She apparently m. John W. Snyder, son of William Snyder, of Gainsborough Tp., by the latter’s wife Elizabeth Lindaberry.[57]
  2. Enos Dean, b. 24 March 1814. He m. before 1836, Diana Cooper, daughter of Solomon and Sophia (____) Cooper. They had the following children:[58]
    1. Buryl Franklin Dean b. 1836; m. Eliza Jane Dennis, d. in 1922 at Wheatly, Ontario. They had issue.
    2. Hannibal Rathburn Dean, Sr., b. 11 July 1837 in Caistor Tp., Lincoln Co., Ontario; m. in 1861, Catherine Hewson/Houston, d. 30 April 1924 in Vassar Tp., Tuscola Co., Michigan, daughter of John and Mary Phidora (____) Hewson. They had issue.
    3. Sulvan/Saul/Solomon Dean, b. 1840; m. Fanny Hewson, sister to the wife of his brother Hannibal.
    4. Harriet Sophia Dean, b. 1842; m. in 1861, John Allen, d. 9 Dec. 1882 in Tuscola Co. Michigan. They had issue.
    5. Bayham Dean, b. 1844.
    6. Purvis Enos Dean, b. 1848; m. Anna ____.
    7. Stephen Dean.
    8. Elmer Dean.
    9. Catherine Dean.
    10. Barintha Dean.
  3. Elizabeth/Ann Dean, b. 25 Nov. 1815. She m. Joseph DeWitt, b. 11 Sept. 1842, d. 12 Oct. 1853, son of Jacob DeWitt, of Tapleytown, Saltfleet Tp.[59] They lived on the west side of Quarry Road, Beamsville.
  4. Daniel Ward Eastman Dean, b. 2 Oct. 1817, living 1876. He was named after the Rev. D.W. Eastman, a minister of the church of Scotland, who came to Upper Canada from the Presbytery of Morristown, N.J., in 1801, to take up a post at Beaverdams, in Thorold Tp., where he served until 1815. Consequently D.W.E. Dean acquired the nickname “Priest,” and is actually so called in the 1876 atlas of Lincoln Co., which lists him as the owner of 50 acres in lot 15, concession 2 of Clinton Tp.[60] He has not been found in the LDS index to the 1881 census. He m. Mary Tufford.
  5. Maria Dean, b. 1 May 1821, d. 6 Feb. 1875. She m. Joseph James, and they lived on part of lot 12, concession 4 of Clinton Tp. He is likely the man of this name, aged 60, found in 1881 census with a much younger wife Roseann, aged 38, who could not possibly have been the mother of his eldest son, Johnson James, aged 27.[61]
  6. Barbara A. Dean, b. 17 Feb. 1823, living 1881. She m. by licence dated 30 Nov. 1844, John A. Huff, b. 1835-36 (aged 45 in 1881) in the U.S., living 1881. They lived on part of lot 12, concession 3 of Clinton Tp. They are found in the 1881 census of Clinton Tp., in which he is called a farmer and the family’s religion is given as Presbyterian.[62] Known issue:
    1. Mary C. Huff, b. 1846-47 (aged 29 in 1876) in Clinton Tp. (per her marriage record). She m. 13 Sept. 1876 in Clinton Tp.,[63] Anson A. Konkle, b. 1850-51 (aged 25 in 1876) in Clinton Tp. (per marriage record), son of William and Eliza (____) Konkle. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were of Clinton Tp., and the groom was a farmer; the witnesses were Solomon T. Huff and William A. Wismer, both of Clinton Tp.
    2. Solomon T. Huff, b. 1847-48 (aged 26 in 1874) in Clinton Tp. (per marriage record). He m. 13 Oct. 1874 in Clinton Tp.,[64] Sophia Amelia Henry, b. 1843-44 (aged 30 in 1874) in Clinton Tp. (per marriage record), daughter of James R. Henry and Mary Zimmerman. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were resident in Clinton Tp., and the groom was a farmer; the witnesses were Frank Hill and Kinsley Shaw, residences unstated. Solomon T. Huff served as a witness at the wedding of his elder sister Mary C. Huff in 1876.
    3. Lyda [or Lydia?] A. Huff, b. 1859-60 (aged 21 in 1881) in Ontario; still living unmarried with her parents in 1881.
  7. Philip Dean, Jr., b. 10 March 1825. He was living unmarried with his parents in 1852, but afterward m. Julia (or Judy?) Tufford. This was possibly before 1858, as they do not appear in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1869. He has not been found in the LDS index to the 1881 census.
  8. Catherine Dean, b. 19 March 1828, d. 13 Dec. 1910 at St. Catharines, Lincoln Co., of senile decay, aged over 82 years, her death notice specifically naming her as a daughter of Philip Dean and Catharine Book.[65] She m. (probably by 1852) Edwin or Edsom Eddy, b. probably in 1823 (aged 58 in 1881, 75 in 1899) in Ireland (per 1881 census and death record), d. 21 April 1899 in Clinton Tp., Lincoln Co., of neuralgia of the heart,[66] They lived on part of lot 13, concession 4 of Clinton Tp. As “Edsom Eddy” he is found with his wife and three children in the 1881 census of Clinton Tp., which calls him a farmer and gives the family’s religion as Canadian Presbyterian.[67] However, in DGT and in the record of his death (in which he is again called a farmer) his name is given as Edwin Eddy. Catherine’s death record calls her a widow; the death was reported by R.D. Eddy, of St. Catharines. Known issue (per 1881 census):
    1. William Eddy, b. 1854-55 (aged 26 in 1881) in Ontario; still living unmarried with his parents in 1881.
    2. Randolf Eddy, b. 1856-57 (aged 24 in 1881) in Ontario; still living unmarried with his parents in 1881. If he is the R.D. Eddy who reported his mother’s death, then he was surely also the Randolf Deloyd Eddy who m. 2 May 1883 in North Grimsby Tp.[68] Helen Alvira Russ, b. probably in 1856 (aged 44 in 1901, 54 in 1911, 61 in 1917) in Grimsby Tp. (per death record), d. 4 Sept. 1917 at St. Catharines, aged 61 years, of carcinoma, daughter of Ezechiel Russ and Margaret Zeller, who are named in her death record.[69] The latter couple was enumerated at the village of Port Dalhousie, Lincoln Co., in the 1901 census,[70] but by 1911 had removed to St. Catharines, where they are found in the census of that year.[71] Issue of Randolf Deloyd Eddy and Helen Alvira Russ:
      1. Lena F. Eddy, b. 18 Oct. 1886. She was living with her parents in 1901. She m. by 1909, Thomas Walker, b. 31 July 1881 in Scotland. They were living in Michigan by 1909. They had seven children, the youngest being Vina Jane Walker, now deceased.[72]
      2. Laura F. Eddy, b. 7 July 1888; still living unmarried with her parents in 1901.
    3. Lillian Eddy, b. 1862-63 (aged 18 in 1881) in Ontario; still living unmarried with her parents in 1881.
  9. Sarah Jane Dean, b. 8 June 1830, living unmarried with her parents in 1852. She m. 1 Aug. 1857,[73] Jacob Huffman.
  10. Matthias Dean, b. 8 Aug. 1832, d. unmarried by 1852.
  11. Hannah Dean, b. 20 May 1834, d. by 1852.

4. David2 Dean,[74] son of John Dean and Margaret Flach, was b. 22 May 1793, d. 29 June 1864, and was buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard. He m. by 1816, Cornelia Travis, b. 28 July 1798, d. 5 Dec. 1868, and buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard, daughter of Caleb Travis,[75] of Grimsby Tp., by his wife Susan Merritt. David Dean was a private in the 4th Regiment of Lincoln Co. Militia in May 1813.[76] He appears in the 1852 and 1861 censuses of Clinton Tp. According to DGT, they had twelve children:[77]

  1. Caroline Dean, b. 27 Sept. 1816; m. Michael Spiece, and had four children.
  2. Darius Dean, b. 11 Oct. 1817, still single in 1880, when as Darius Dean, aged 63, millwright, born in Ontario, father b. in New Jersey and mother b. in Ontario, he appears in a household at White Rock, Huron Co., Michigan, which included his younger brother David, the latter’s son Cyrus, and others; although his brother Davis is shown as the head, it should probably have been Darius or his nephew Cyrus.[78] He is generally stated to have remained unmarried.
  3. 7Andrew Tintern Dean, b. 27 Sept. 1819.
  4. 8David Dean, Jr., b. 22 June 1820.
  5. Elizabeth Anne Dean, b. 5 Oct. 1823, d. 29 Dec. 1873, and buried at St. Anns; she m. 22 Sept. 1840, John Ennsley, by whom, according to DGT, she had six children.
  6. 9Israel Dean, b. 1825.
  7. Susanne Dean, b. 1827; m. after 1852, Jim Walker. DGT does not state whether they had issue. They have not been found in the LDS index to the 1881 census of Ontario.
  8. Margaret Dean, b. 1828. DGT says “she may have been the Margaret Dean who m. John W. Snyder,” but shows one of the daughters of this union as married to a man who was older than this Margaret herself. Annals of the Forty more plausibly identifies Snyder’s wife as Margaret Dean, b. 1812, daughter of Philip Dean (no. 3).
  9. An infant, b. [and died?] 1830.
  10. 10Cyrus S. Dean, b. 1831.
  11. An infant, b. [and died?] 1833.
  12. 11Aaron Dean, b. 11 Aug. 1834.

5. Andrew2 Dean,[79] of Clinton Tp., son of John Dean and Margaret Flach, was b. 20 July 1796, d. 27 March 1841, and was buried in St. Anns Presbyterian churchyard. He m. by 1824, Mary Mingle, b. ca. 1798 in Canada, living 1881, daughter of John Mingle,[80] of ____, by his wife Catherine Snyder.
Andrew Dean was a private in the 4th Regiment of Lincoln Co. Militia in May 1813 and Oct. 1814.[81] He is listed in the 1828 census of Gainsborough Tp. — of which he himself was one of the two enumerators — with a household (including himself) consisting of 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16, 2 males under, and 1 female under; thus he evidently had three children at that time.[82] He is probably the one of this name who as “Andrew Dean, of Gainsborough, yeoman,” served as a bondsman to the 1832 marriage contract of John Mingle (perhaps a kinsman of Andrew’s wife) and Susannah Hansil [i.e. Hansel].[83] In the 1842 census of Clinton Tp. he is listed as a mill owner, resident in the province for 41 years, with a family consisting of a wife and seven children (not named); his property was in the 8th concession but the lot number is illegible.[84] His widow is found in the household of their son Absalom in the 1881 census. DGT lists six children for him:

  1. 12William Dean, b. probably 2 June 1823.
  2. Absalom Dean, b. 1829-30 (aged 51 in 1881) at St. Anns, Gainsborough Tp., d. 11 Dec. 1918 at Vittoria, Charlottesille Tp., Norfolk Co., of senile gangrene, allegedly aged 90 years, 5 months, and 28 days (thus implying a birthdate of about 13 June 1828),[85] and buried in St. Anns Presbyterian Cemetery. He m. by 1854, Sarah ____, b. 24 Feb. 1834, d. 30 June 1863, and buried in St. Anns Cemetery. The 1861 census of Gainsborough Tp. calls him a yeoman.[86] He had removed to Charlotteville Tp., Norfolk Co., by 1881, when the census of that year calls him a farmer and gives the family’s religion as Presbyterian; his marital status is given as married, but probably in error as no wife is shown for him, the only woman in the household of the right age being his sister, Ann Dean.[87] In his death notice, he is specifically called a widower; it further describes him as a farmer, and names his parents as Andrew Dean and Mary Mingle. Known issue:[88]
    1. Mary Dean, b. 1853-54 (aged 7 in 1861), but this in conflict with the date of birth of the daughter Rachael.
    2. Rachael Caroline Dean, b. 1856 (aged 5 in 1861) in Grimsby Tp, d. 1939, called a daughter of Absalom Dean and Sarah ____ in her marriage record. She m. 12 Nov. 1876 at Smithville, Lincoln Co., by Canadian Methodist rites,[89] Robert Cosby, b. 1854-55 (aged 21 in 1876) in Caistor Tp., son of John Cosby and Mary Ann Hansel, grandson of George Hansel and Sarah Wilkersonk, great-grandson of Andreas/Andrew Hansel and Christina Flach, and great-great-grandson of Andreas Flach and Anna Maria Schüler. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents without however supplying the maiden surnames of their mothers, the groom was of Caistor Tp. and the bride of Clinton Tp., and the groom was a farmer. Known issue:
      1. Clara Bell Cosby, b. 19 Nov. 1883 in Lincoln Co.
      2. Oscar Cosby, b. 17 June 1887 in Lincoln Co.
      3. Omer Cosby, b. 6 July 1889 in Lincoln Co.
    3. William Dean, b. ca. 1857 (aged 3 in 1861, 22 in 1879) in Norfolk Co. (per his marriage record); m. 29 Aug. 1879 in Mersea Tp., Essex Co.[90] Hannah Plant, b. 1858-59 (aged 20 in 1879) in Mersea Tp., daughter of John and Elizabeth (____) Plant. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were of Essex County (township not stated), and the groom was a farmer; the witnesses were Thomas Christy and Mar— (illegible) Butler.
    4. Henry Dean, b. 1858-59 (aged 2 in 1861).
    5. Philip Dean, b. 1862-63 (aged 18 in 1881), the only child still living with his father in 1881.
  3. Emery Dean, b. 1 March 1833, d. 3 Aug. 1857, and buried at St. Anns. He m. before 1856, Frances M. ____, b. 10 Oct. 1835, d. 27 April 1859, and buried with her husband. DGT lists only one child for them:
    1. Emma Jane Dean, b. 26 Aug. 1856, d. 26 Jan. 1858, and buried at St. Anns.
  4. Lydia Dean, m. Hamilton Nelson. She may not have been his only wife, as a Hamilton Nelson, aged 48 (thus b. 1832-33) is found in the 1881 census of Grimsby Tp. with a wife Rachel and three children.[91]
  5. Ann Dean, b. 24 July 1836 (per 1901 census, although her age was given as only 40 in 1881), living unmarried with her brother William in 1861, with her brother Absalom in 1881, and again with her brother William in 1901.
  6. Catherine Dean, said to have m. ____ Weaver.

6. Thomas Allen3 Dean, son of John Dean and Ann Mingle, was b. 16 Feb. 1811, and d. 30 April 1870. Some time between 1834 and 1839 he acquired all of the 200 acres of lot 21 in the 2nd concession of Erin Tp. which had been his father’s, for which he was taxed £40 in 1839; the composition of his household is not indicated. The census of the following year makes it clear that he was the only member of his household, while the assessment shows his tax as £48.[92] He m. 22 Dec. 1847, Sarah Ann Whitman,[93] who was certainly still alive on 5 Aug. 1854 (the birthdate of their son Calvin, whose marriage record gives the name of his mother as Sarah Ann). Whether she was the same as the widow Sarah Dean, ostensibly b. 1836-37 (her age is given as 34 years in the 1871 census) in Ontario, we are unable to say, although obviously if this was the case her age in the 1871 census is wildly understated. This widow Sarah Dean is found in the census of Erin Tp., Wellington Co., the family’s religion being given as Episcopal Methodist.[94] We have not found her in the LDS transcription of the 1881 census. DGT shows no issue for Thomas Dean, but we have reconstructed a sizeable family for him. The names he chose for his children are intensely reminiscent of those used in the family of his uncle, Andrew Dean (no. 5 above). Known issue, by one or two wives named Sarah:

  1. Annie Maria Dean, b. 1850-51 (aged 20 at marriage) in Erin Tp. Described in her marriage record as a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Dean, she m. 15 Feb. 1871 in Wellington Co., Charles Ismond, b. 1849-50 (aged 21 at marriage) in Erin Tp., son of Thomas and Ann (____) Ismond.
  2. Emery Allen Dean, b. 5 June 1852 (per 1901 census) in Erin Village, d. 27 March 1939 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto, aged at least 86 years, after falling downstairs and breaking his hip.[95] He was living unmarried with his mother in 1871. We have not found any possible match for him in the LDS transcription of the 1881 census. He m. 28 Aug. 1882 in Durham Tp., Grey Co.,[96] Abigail Vollett. He is found as a widower in the 1901 census of Durham Tp., Grey Co., at which time only his children Adeline, Lorne, and Salem were still living with him.[97] His great-grandson Charles A. Dixon writes to us, “I remember my great grandfather; he was a lovely man.” A death notice supplied by Mr. Dixon reads:
Injured Saturday when he fell down a flight of stairs at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Burleigh, 206 Van Horne Street (1089 Dupont). He was widely known in Masonic circles in Durham Ont., having been a member of the order there for 51 years. He also belonged to the Orange Order. For the past 7 years he lived in Toronto. A carpenter by trade, he retired 25 years ago. Suddenly at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto, in his 90th year, husband of the late Abigail Vollett Dean. Funeral services at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Adeline Stothers, 239 Emerson Ave.
We cannot accept the statement that the deceased was “in his 90th year” (i.e. past his 89th birthday) at his death, as this would place his birth in 1849-50, making him at least 2½ years older than stated in the 1901 census, and his mother less than 15 years old at the time of his birth. Known issue:[98]
    1. Henry Allen Dean, b. 30 May 1883, of whom nothing further is known.
    2. Elva May Dean, b. 7 Feb. 1886; m. 27 June 1906, Archibald Alvin McDermaid.
    3. Adeline Thyra (known as Raeline) Dean, b. 18 Oct. 1888; m. 23 June 1909, William James Stothers.
    4. Lorne Dean, b. 18 Aug. 1892; a soldier in World War I.
    5. Anna (“Annie”) Dean, b. in Nov. 1894 at chatham, d. 1 Jan. 1944 at Toronto; m. Earnest Fauntleroy Burleigh, by whom she had six children. They were the grandparents of Charles A. Dixon.
    6. Emery Salem Dean, b. 13 Sept. 1897.[99] When he registered for military service in World War I he exaggerated his age, claiming to have been born in 1895.
    7. Ruby Abigail Dean, b. 8 Feb. 1900; m. 6 July 1921, Frederick Reuben Hartley Turner.
  3. Calvin Augustus Dean, b. 5 Aug. 1854 (per 1901 census), living 1901. He m. 16 Aug. 1887 in Melancthon Township, Grey Co.,[100] Charlotte Gant, b. 25 Jan. 1852 (per 1901 census), living 1901, daughter of Louis John Gant and Mary Ann ____. His marriage record names him as a son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Dean. They are found in the 1901 census of Melancthon Tp. with the following children:[101]
    1. Michael Dean, b. 9 May 1888.
    2. Mary A. Dean, b. 29 April 1890.
    3. Thomas J. Dean, b. 27 Feb. 1892.
    4. Peter J. Dean, b. 4 March 1896.
  4. H… (illegible) Dean, b. 1856-57 (aged 14 in 1871).
  5. Ab… (illegible) J. Dean, b. 1857-58 (aged 13 in 1871).
  6. Absalom W. Dean, b. 1862-63 (aged 8 in 1871). Despite the slight discrepancy in their stated ages, he is probably the 17-year-old Absalom Dean found in the household of his uncle and aunt, John and Thirza (Dean) Shingler, in the 1881 census of Erin Tp.[102] He is also, probably, the Absalom Dean, b. 3 May 1863, with wife Marey A., b. 23 Aug. 1859, found in the 1901 census of Erin Tp.; no children were living with them at the time.[103] Lorine McGinnis Schultze has pointed out to us that he is probably also the Absalom Wellington Dean who d. 2 Oct. 1915 at Orten, Erin Tp., Wellington Co., at the (possibly exaggerated) age of 57 years, having committed suicide by shooting himself; he is described in the death record as a “Temperance Hotel Keeper,” and a married man.
  7. Mary M. Dean, b. 1867-68 (aged 3 in 1871).

7. Andrew Tintern3 Dean,[104] son of David Dean and Cornelia Travis, was b. 27 Sept. 1819, and d. (testate) 2 April 1888.[105] He m. (1) by about 1844, Margaret Johnson, b. ca. 1824, d. 1857-61. He m. (2) after 1861, Mary Jane Patterson, b. 25 Jan. 1844 in Ontario, of Scottish ancestry, d. 18 July 1903, and buried at St. Anns. Andrew Dean was a miller, and the builder of Dean’s mill, on which is a marble tablet reading: “A.D. 1857, this mill was erected by Andrew Dean for the good of man, and he consecrates a tenth of all the proceeds to the spreading of the Gospel of Christ on Earth.”[106] Andrew Dean is found with much of his huge family in the 1881 census of Clinton Tp., in which he is called a miller, and his family’s religion is given as Canadian Methodist.[107] His will, proved in 1888, has not been seen by us. His widow is found with three of their children in the 1901 census of Clinton Tp.[108] The Andrew Dean homestead was sold in 1959 and became a golf course, with the house being used as the clubhouse. DGT lists five children of the first marriage and fourteen of the second:

(by first wife:)

  1. Matilda Dean, b. ca. 1844; m. ____ W____, according to DGT. However, there is no Matilda Dean in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1899, and the LDS index to the 1881 census does not show any woman named Matilda of this approximate age who was married to a man whose last name began with W.
  2. John Frederick Dean, d. in infancy.
  3. William Dean, d. in infancy.
  4. Simon Dean, b. 1850-51 (aged 30 in 1881) in Ontario, living 1881. He m. by 1872, Georgina Johnson, b. 1854-55 (aged 26 in 1881) in Ontario, although no marriage of a Simon Dean has been found in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1886. DGT does not trace issue of this marriage, but Simon and his wife are found next to his father in the 1881 census of Clinton Tp., in which he is called a miller and the family’s religion is given as Canadian Methodist;[109] the following children are found with them at that time:
    1. Jessie Dean (female), b. 1872-73 (aged 8 in 1881) in the USA.
    2. Flora Dean, English, b. 1874-75 (aged 6 in Ontario.
    3. Mabel Dean, b. 1878-79 (aged 2 in 1881) in Ontario.
  5. Mary Dean, b. 1857-58 (aged 20 in 1874). She m. 12 Feb. 1874 in Clinton Tp.,[110] Henry J. Eddy, b. 1853-54 (aged 24 in 1874) in the State of New York (per marriage record), son of Robert and Mary (____) Eddy. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, she was residing in Clinton Tp. and he at Lewiston; the witnesses were Hiram Pletcher of Niagara and William E. Eddy of Lewiston.

(by second wife:)

  1. Seth Dean, d. in infancy.
  2. Evelina Dean, d. at the age of 12 years.
  3. Hesper Dean, b. 1865-66 (aged 15 in 1881, 19 in 1885). She m. 11 Feb. 1885 in Clinton Tp.,[111] Byron H. Eckardt, b. 1862-63 (aged 22 in 1885) in Clinton Tp. (per marriage record), son of Frederick and Magdeline (____) Eckhardt. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were resident in Clinton Tp., and the groom was a farmer; the witnesses were William Haist and Electra Michener, both of Clinton. On 16 Dec. 1885 “Byron & Hesper Eckhardt, both of Clinton Twp,” served as witnesses at the wedding, celebrated 11 Feb. 1885 in Clinton Tp., of a Franklin H. Eckardt, aged 28, born in Clinton Tp. and resident at Campden, Ontario, son of Frederick and Margaret Eckhardt.[112] According to DGT, this couple had five children.
  4. Romain Dean, b. 1867-68 (aged 13 in 1881). He m. 24 June 1890 in Clinton Tp., Lincoln Co.,[113] Jessie Grobb, b. 12 Aug. 1870 in Clinton Tp., daughter of Joseph H. Grobb and Mary Flynn.[114] We have not found this couple in the LDS index to the 1881 census. Known issue, per DGT:
    1. Romain Dean, d. before 1960.
    2. Lloyd Dean.
    3. A daughter, d. aged 2½ years.
  5. Martha Dean, b. 16 Feb. 1869, living 1910. She m. 20 Dec. 1899 at Jordan Station, Lincoln Co.,[115] William Melvin Comfort (called Melvin William Comfort in his marriage record), b. 30 April 1875, living 1910, son of Ephraim Comfort, of Clinton Tp., by his second wife, Margaret Zimmerman. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parites were of Clinton Tp.; the witnesses were Henry and Ada Dean, of Clinton. They had three children.[116]
  6. Sarah Dean, b. 1870-71 (aged 10 in 1881), living 1948 at St. Catharines. She m. (1) 18 May 1892 at Jordan Station, Lincoln Co.,[117] Joseph H. Smith.[118] She m. (2) (as his second wife) well after 1895,[119] Charles High, widower of her sister Lydia Dean. DGT does not state whether she had issue. See below for a photograph the 1906 High-Dean family reunion.
  7. Ada Dean (twin to Ida), b. 1873-74 (aged 7 in 1881), d. unmarried. She is presumably the Ada Dean who served as a witness at the weddings of her sisters Ida (1898), Eliza (1898), and Martha (1899).
  8. Ida Dean (twin to Ada), b. 1873-74 (aged 7 in 1881). She m. 8 Jan 1896 in Campden Tp., Lincoln Co.,[120] Harry Johnson, b. 1870-71 (aged 25 in 1896) at Glasgow, Scotland (per marriage record), son of Thomas Johnson and Catherine Stewart. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, she was of Campden Tp. but he of Buffalo, New York; the witnesses were Christopher Warner of Buffalo and Ada Dean of Campden. DGT does not state whether they had issue.
  9. Eliza Dean, b. about 1875 (aged 5 in 1881, 23 in 1898). She m. 28 June 1898 at Louth Tp., Lincoln Co.,[121] Edward Allen Moyer, b. 1869-70 (aged 28 in 1898) in Campden Tp., son of William W. and Anna (____) Moyer. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, she was of Campden Tp. but he of Hartford, and he was a draughtsman; the witnesses were Andrew Dean of Campden and Ada Dean of Buffalo, New York (is this residence an error?). DGT shows two children for them.
  10. Lydia Dean, b. 1877-78 (aged 3 in 1881), d. 27 March 1921. She m. (as his first wife) 27 April 1895 at Merritton, Ontario,[122] Charles High, who after her death married her sister Sarah. DGT shows three children for them.
  11. Andrew (“Boyd”) Dean, Jr., b. 15 March 1879 (per 1901 census). He was living unmarried with his mother in 1901, but subsequently m. Maud Irish. Issue, per DGT:
    1. Dorothy Dean; married and had issue.
    2. Earl Dean; married and had issue.
  12. Jane Dean, b. in March 1881 (per 1881 census), living with her mother in 1901; said to have d. unmarried.
  13. Henry Dean, b. after 1881, but not living with his mother in 1901. He m. Susie Putman. Only known child:
    1. Vera Dean, d. ca. 1935; she married and had issue.
  14. Lucy Dean, b. 17 Feb. 1885 (per 1901 census), living with her mother in 1901, d. unmarried.

8. David3 Dean,[123] Jr., son of David Dean and Cornelia Travis, was b. 22 June 1820, and d. 12 Oct. 1904, aged 83 years, 8 months, and 20 days according to his tombstone (but the calculation or the reading is wrong), and buried with his wife and two of their children in Straffordville Cemetery, Bayham Tp., Elgin Co.[124] He m. 21 July 1841 by licence, by W.H. Landon, Baptist minister of Woodstock,[125] Ann Brown, b. about 24 Jan. 1823 in Ontario, d. 31 Aug. 1881, aged 58 years, 7 months, and 7 days.[126] Their marriage record calls him of Clinton Tp. and her of Zorra Tp.; the witnesses were Andrew Dean and Eleanor Brown. David Dean and his family appear in the 1852 census, in which he is called a miller.[127] David Dean and his wife were at Innerkip, East Zorra Tp., Oxford Co., in 1856, if the birthplace of their son Cyrus is given correctly in his marriage record. They however removed to Bayham Tp., Elgin Co., by 1861, when the census of that year calls him a farmer and mill owner, and gives the family’s religion as Free Will Baptist; the ages of the children Cyrus (16) and Mary (14) as there given are impossible, as these children were not even alive in 1852, and in the case of Cyrus the figure cannot be reconciled with later records.[128] The 1871 calls him a millwright and gives their religion as Free Baptist.[129] The 1881 census calls him a millwright and gives their religion as Baptist.[130]
In the 1880 U.S. census David Dean, aged 57, farmer and millwright, born in Ontario, father b. in New Jersey and mother b. in Ontario, appears, ostensibly as the head, in a household at White Rock, Huron Co., Michigan, which included his brother Darius and son Cyrus.[131] Surely, given the continuity of his residence in Bayham Tp., Ontario, this must be a mistake, and he was merely a visitor at the time; for although he is indicated as being married, there is no wife recorded with him.
     Known issue, per census records:

  1. Darius Dean, b. 1842-43 (aged 9 in 1852, 18 in 1861), living with his parents in 1861 but not in 1871; he was a laborer in 1861. DGT shows both of his marriage, and states that “he had issue,” but without giving further details. He m. (1) 16 May 1867 in Elgin Co.,[132] Elizabeth (“Betty”) A. High, b. 1845, d. 6 Oct. 1868, aged 23 years, 6 months, and 24 days, and as “Elizabeth A. wife of Darius Dean” was buried in Old Richmond Cemetery, Bayham Tp., Elgin Co., where many members of the High family are interred.[133] He m. (2) 13 Aug. 1873 at Clifton [i.e. the place of this name in Stamford Tp., Welland Co.?],[134] Hannah High. Despite the discrepancy in their stated ages, he is doubtless therefore the Darius Dean, aged 32 (implying a birthdate of 1848-49) who is found with wife Hannah in the 1881 census of Bayham Tp., in which he is called a school teacher.[135] Known issue (per 1881 census):
    1. Ada Dean, b. 1875-76 (aged 5 in 1881) in Ontario.
    2. Esco Dean, b. 1878-79 (aged 2 in 1881) in Ontario.
    3. Ernest Dean, b. in Dec. 1880 in Ontario.
  2. Joseph Dean, b. about 21 May 1848, d. 1 March 1865, aged 16 years, 9 months, and 10 days, and buried with his parents.
  3. Susannah Dean, b. probably in 1849 (aged 2 in 1852, 12 in 1861) although her tombstone says 1850, d. 1930, and buried with her husband in Straffordville Cemetery, Bayham Tp., Elgin Co.[136] She was still living with her parents in 1861. She m. 25 March 1867 in Elgin Co.,[137] Ambrose G. or J. High, b. 1846, d. 1927. He is called Ambrose G. in their marriage record but Ambrose J. on their tombstone. Also buried with them, and presumably their children, are:
    1. Lincoln R. High, b. 1869, d. 1929.
    2. Margaret M. High, b. 1876, d. 1950.
    3. Mary Olive High, b. 1882, d. 1951.
  4. Eleanor J. Dean, b. 1850-51 (aged 10 in 1861), d. 1912, and buried with her husband and family in Straffordville Cemetery, Bayham Tp., Elgin Co.[138] She was still living unmarried with her parents in 1861. She m. 15 Dec. 1864 in Elgin Co.,[139] Henry Hatch, b. 1843, d. 1919. Her marriage record calls her Ellen, while DGT calls her Eleanor. Known issue:
    1. Helena Hatch, b. 1867, d. 24 Aug. 1950, aged 82 years, and she and her husband are buried with her parents. She m. Calvin W. Lane, b. 1861, d. 1919. A death notice for her reads, in part, “Mrs. Helena H. Lane, 82 years, mother of Donald & Willard Lane; sister of Misses Mirianna and Louisa Hatch. Funeral from the residence, 42 Brock St., Tillsonburg, August 26 1949 to Strafffordville Cemetery.”[140] An Eleanor M. Lane, b. 1901, d. 1942, perhaps a daughter-in-law, is buried with them. Beside them are the sons mentioned in the death notice:
      1. Willard Hatch Lane, of Michigan, Private in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War I, b. 12 Oct. 1894, d. 1 April 1968.
      2. Donald Garner Lane, Capt. in the R.C.C.S., b. 1903, d. 1989.
    2. Mary Anna or Mirianna Hatch, called Mirianna in the 1950 death notice of her sister Helena bu Mary Anna on her own tombstone, b. 1874, d. (unmarried) 1959.
    3. Louise/Louisa Hatch, called Louisa in the 1950 death notice of her sister Helena but Louise on her own tombstone, b. 1878, d. (unmarried) 1970.
  5. Andrew Dean, b. 25 Sept. 1852 (per 1901 census), living 1901. He was still living unmarried with his parents in 1871, when he was a farmer. He m. 28 Nov. 1877 at Walsingham Centre, (Mary) Abigail Mathews, b. 8 Mary 1856 (per 1901 census) in Ontario, living 1881. Their marriage record calls her Abigail Mathews (giving her place of residence as Walsingham Tp.), but the 1881 census calls her Mary A. He is enumerated next to his parents in the 1881 census, in which he is called a farmer and the family’s religion is given as Protestant.[141] He and his family are also found in the 1901 census of Bayham Tp.[142] Known issue (birthdates per 1901 census):
    1. Ida May Dean, b. 16 Oct. 1879.
    2. Harry A. Dean, b. Jan 21 1882.
    3. Alberta A. Dean, b. Jul 29 1885.
    4. Viola B. Dean, b. Sep 26 1890.
  6. Cyrus Dean, b. 27 Feb. 1856 (per 1901 census), at Innerkip, East Zorra Tp., Oxford Co. (per his marriage record), living 1901. The 1861 census, which shows the children in this family in no particular sequence, gives Cyrus’s age as 16, but this is clearly erroneous given the other census records. It is impossible that there could have been two sons named Cyrus of whom the older died young, as the dates would have their lives overlapping. Cyrus Dean was living with his parents in 1861. As Cyrus Dean, farmer, of Innerkip, Bayham Tp., aged 21, he m. (1) 26 March 1877 at Brownsville, Oxford Co.,[143] Hannah H. Forbes, b. 1856-57 (aged 20 in 1877, 23 in 1880) in Dereham Tp., d. by 1884, daughter of Leander and Sarah S. (____) Forbes. She is incorrectly called Ella Forbes in DGT. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, he was of Bayham Tp. and she of Dereham Tp.; the witnesses were William Brown and Sarah M. Forbes, both of Dereham. In 1880 Cyrus Dean and his first wife Hannah were living at White Rock, Huron Co., Michigan, when he is called a farmer in the census.[144] As noted above, although the head of the family is shown as Cyrus’s father David Dean, it seems more probable that the true head was the latter’s brother Darius, another member of the household. In any case, Cyrus himself was probably not the head, as early the next year he is found back in Canada, in the 1881 census of Dereham Tp., Oxford Co., in which he is called a farmer and the family’s religion is given as Methodist; again his wife’s name is given as Hannah.[145] Cyrus Dean m. (2) before 1884, Maggie Wills, b. 9 June 1861 in Ontario (per 1901 census), from whom, according to DGT, he was subsequently separated. “Syrus” Dean and his wife “Margeret” are found in the 1901 census of Aldborough Tp., Elgin Co., in which he is called a farmer and the family’s religion is given as Methodist.[146] According to DGT, Cyrus Dean m. (3) Louise Mitchell. Known issue:

    (by first wife:)

    1. Merwin Dean, b. 1877-67 (aged 2 in 1880, 3 in 1881) in Ontario, no longer living with his father in 1901.
    2. Ransom Dean, b. in Jan. 1880 in Ontario (1880 and 1900 U.S. censuses), no longer living with his father in 1901. As an adult he returned to Michigan, and as Ransom Dean, then unmarried, born in Canada in January 1880 to parents both born in Canada, was enumerated in Elmwood Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, in the 1900 census, in which he is called a farm laborer and his year of citizenship is given as 1887.[147]

    (by second wife:)

    1. Ira Dean, b. 24 Nov. 1884 in Ontario.
    2. Alfred Dean, b. 8 Nov. 1891 in Ontario.
  7. Mary L. Dean, b. in July 1858, d. 14 Aug. 1858, aged 5 weeks, and buried with her parents.
  8. Mary L. Dean, b. 1860-61 (aged 10 in 1871, 20 in 1881, 26 in 1886), living unmarried with her parents in 1881. Like that given for her brother Cyrus, the age of 14 years given for this child in the 1861 census, implying a birthdate of 1846-47, is utterly erroneous, as in 1852 she had not even been born. She m. 29 Dec 1886 in Bayham Tp.[148] Towsend Lounsbury, b. 1857-58 (aged 28 in 1886) in Houghton Tp. (per marriage record), son of Sylvester and Sybil (____) Lounsbury. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were of Bayham Tp., and the groom was a farmer; the witnesses were David O. Dean of Michigan, U.S.A., and Mary Lounsbury of Bayham. A little earlier, “Townsend Lousbery and Mary L. Dean, both of Bayham” served as witnesses at the marriage, celebrated 7 July 1886 at Brownsville, of Electa Marilda Lounsbury, aged 26, born in Houghton Tp. and resident in Bayham (daughter of Sylvester and “Sirvilla” Lousbury) to William H. Segar.[149]
  9. David Dean, Jr., b. 1863-64 (aged 7 in 1871), living unmarried with his parents in 1881, d. unmarried according to DGT. He is presumably the David O. Dean of Michigan who served as a witness at the weddoing of his sister Mary in 1886.

9. Israel3 Dean,[150] son of David Dean and Cornelia Travis, was b. in 1825, d. 1881-1901. He m. by 1848, Charity Martin, b. 7 Aug. 1828, living 1901. They are found with their two youngest children in the 1881 census of Willoughby Tp., Welland Co., in which he is called a lumber merchant and their religion is given as Dunker.[151] His widow is found next door to their son Israel in the 1901 census of Willoughby Tp.[152] Issue, per DGT (which does not trace any of the lines further):

  1. Mary Dean; said in DGT to have m. Peter Monson, although we cannot find such a couple in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1886.
  2. Cyrus Dean, b. 15 April 1849 (per 1901 census) in Ontario, living 1901. He (then designated of Willoughby Tp.) m. 3 Sept. 1871 at Manchester, New York,[153] Lydia Barnhart, b. 15 Feb. 1844 (per 1901 census) in Ontario, living 1901, daughter of Abraham Barnhart, of Bertie Tp. They are enumerated in Willoughby Tp. in the 1881 census, in which he is called a laborer, and the family’s religion is given as Dunker.[154] They are enumerated in Wainfleet Tp., in the Haldimand & Monck district, in the 1901 census.[155] Known issue, all born in Ontario:
    1. Fredrick Dean, b. 12 June 1872 (per 1901 census), still living unmarried with his parents in 1901.
    2. Edna Dean, b. 1874-75 (aged 7 in 1881), no longer living with her parents in 1901.
    3. Melvin Dean, b. 1875-76 (aged 6 in 1881), no longer living with his parents in 1901.
    4. Celia Dean, b. 1878-79 (aged 3 in 1881), no longer living with her parents in 1901.
    5. Joseph Dean, b. 1879-80 (aged 2 in 1881), no longer living with his parents in 1901.
    6. Frank Dean, b. 18 July 1882 (per 1901 census), still living unmarried with his parentsin 1901.
  3. Benjamin Dean, b. 12 May 1851, living 1901. He (then designated of Willoughby Tp.) m. 22 Aug. 1871 at Buffalo, New York,[156] Elizabeth Barnhart, b. 19 March 1849 in Ontario, living 1901, daughter of Abraham Barnhart, of Bertie Tp., and presumably sister to Benjamin’s brother Cyrus’s wife. They appear in the 1881 census, in which he is called a section worker, and his own religion is given as “W. Brethren” but that of the rest of his family as Dunker.[157] They appear in the 1901 census of Bertie Tp., Welland Co., which shows a “niece,” Anne Hexamer, b. 19 Dec. 1891, as a member of their household.[158] Known issue:
    1. Elaina Dean, b. 1872-73 (aged 8 in 1881), no longer living with her parents in 1901. As “Alzina” Dean, of Bertie Tp., aged 21 years, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Dean, she m. 19 Nov. 1892 in Welland Co., Freeman A. Johnston, b. 1865-66 (aged 26 at marriage) in Bertie Tp., son of Abraham and Fannie (____) Johnston.
    2. Alfred Dean, b. 1873-74 (aged 7 in 1881), no longer living with his parents in 1901.
    3. Rebecca Dean, b. 1875-76 (aged 5 in 1881), no longer living with her parents in 1901.
    4. David Dean, b. 1877-78 (aged 3 in 1881) in Bertie Tp. (per marriage record), d. 29 Dec. 1958 at Port Colborne, Welland Co.[159] He was no longer living with his parents in 1901. He m. 3 Aug. 1899 at Stevensville, Bertie Tp., Welland Co.,[160] Laura Cecelia Rogers, b. 21 Jan. 1876 at Stevensville, d. 22 Jan. 1978 at Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie, Welland Co., daughter of Alonzo Rogers and Eva Beam. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both were of Stevensville, and he was a miller; the witnesses were Sarah Dean and Victoria Rogers, both of Stevensville. Issue:
      1. Raymond Dean, b. 26 Dec. 1914. He m. 31 Aug. 1940, Mildred Climenhaga, b. 16 Dec. 1917, daughter of Ernest Benjamin Climenhaga and Rhoda McKay. Issue:
        1. Patricia Ann Dean, b. 5 March 1942, d. 24 Aug. 1962.
        2. Mary Ellen Dean; m. Keith Robinson.
        3. David Dean.
      2. Ross Victor Dean, b. 1 Jan. 1902 at Stevensville, d. there 25 March 1965. He m. 11 June 1928 at Stevensville, Hazel Maud Gilmore, b. 16 June 1900 at Stevensville, d. 7 March 1983 at Fort Erie, Welland Co. Issue:
        1. Shirley Dean; she m. Victor Semley, and resides at Stevensville. Only known child: Brenda Semley.
        2. Calder Douglas Dean; he m. Loretta ____, and resides at Stevensville. Issue: Teresa Dean; Karen Dean; Richard Calder Dean, Jr.
        3. Morley Max Dean; he m. Joyce Eleanor Winger, and resides at Stevensville. Issue: James Morley Dean; Elizabeth Ann Dean.
      3. Myrtle Olive Dean, b. 12 July 1906 at Stevensville, Bertie Tp., d. 30 April 1972 at Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie. She m. Edgar George Kramer, d. 22 Oct. 1981 Port Colborne, Welland Co. No known issue.
    5. Esther Dean, b. probably in late 1881, in Bertie Tp. (per marriage record), m. 21 Dec 1898 in Bertie Tp.,[161] Emerson Zimmerman, b. 1871-72 (aged 26 in 1898) in Bertie Tp., son of Elias Zimmerman and Barbara Wilhelm. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were of Bertie Tp., and the groom was a farmer; the witnesses were David Doan and Laura Rogers, both of Bertie Tp. Although the record gives her age as 18, this is unlikely as it would place her birth in 1879-80, in which case she should have appeared with her parents in the 1881 census.
    6. Israel Dean, b. 31 March 1883.
    7. Sarah Dean, b. 15 April 1885, in Bertie Tp. (per marriage record). She m. 21 Dec. 1904 in Bertie Tp.,[162] her sister Esther’s husband’s brother, Frank Zimmerman, b. 1879-80 (aged 24 in 1904) in Michigan (per marriage record), son of Elias Zimmerman and Barbara Wilhelm. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents, both parties were resident in Bertie Tp., and the groom a farmer; the witnesses were Chester Zimmerman and Laura Dean, both of Bertie.
    8. Laura A. Dean, b. 6 Feb. 1887, living 1904, when she served as a witness at the wedding of her elder sister Sarah.
  4. Christine Dean; said in DGT to have m. Benjamin Barnhart, although we cannot find such a couple in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1899.
  5. Cornelia Dean; said in DGT to have m. Leonard Matthews, although we cannot find such a couple in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1899.
  6. John Dean; said in DGT to have m. (1) Caroline Loop; m. (2) Maggie Geyer, although we cannot find either marriage in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1899.
  7. Israel Dean, b. 23 April 1862 (per 1901 census), living 1901. He was living unmarried with his parents in 1881. He m. before 1886, Catherine Heximer, b. 21 Sept. 1867. No marriage for Israel Dean appears in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1869-1886, but his wife’s maiden surname is supplied by the various marriage records of three of their children. This fact was kindly pointed out to us by Lorine McGinnis Schultze. They are found next door to his widowed mother in the 1901 census of Willoughby Tp.[163] Known issue (per 1901 census):
    1. Ida Dean, b. 25 July 1886 in Willoughby Tp. She m. 30 Sept. 1903 in Welland Co., Michael M. Beck, b. 1876-77 (aged 26 at marriage) in Willoughby Tp., son of Michael Beck and Catharine Shabel. The marriage record names both sets of parents.
    2. Edna Dean, b. 23 Oct. 1887. She m. 1 July 1912 in Welland Co., Albert R. Climenhage, b. 1884-85 (aged 27 at marriage), son of Christi[a]n Climenhage and Maggie Beam. The marriage record names both sets of parents.
    3. Cora or Dora Dean, b. 27 Dec. 1890. DGT calls her Dora, but it was as Cora Dean, aged 24 years, that she m. 2 Nov. 1815 in Welland Co., George A. Brown, b. 1888-89 (aged 26 at marriage), son of George A. Brown and Elizabeth McKin.
    4. Roy Dean, b. 28 Aug. 1895.
    5. Harry Dean, b. 9 Jan. 1901.
  8. Charity Dean, b. 1864-65 (aged 16 in 1881); living unmarried with her parents at the taking of the 1881 census. She m. 4 Oct. 1881 in Willoughby Tp.,[164] George Heximer.

10. Cyrus S.3 Dean,[165] son of David Dean and Cornelia Travis, was b. 5 Sept. 1831 (per 1901 census) and as still alive in 1901. According to DGT he was married twice, but only the name of the first wife is known. He m. (1) by 1856, Arabella or Isabella Haw [or Hawthorne?], b. 21 Aug. 1836, living 1901. In the 1861 census of Clinton Tp. he is called a mechanic, and his wife’s name is given as Arabella. We have not located them in the LDS index to the 1881 census of Ontario, but they are found in the 1901 census of Fort Erie Village, which gives her names as Isabella; no children are found with them.[166] Issue, per DGT (the last three possibly by a second wife; none of the lines traced further):

  1. William Dean, b. ca. 1856.
  2. Cyrus Arminius Dean, Jr., b. 11 Sept. 1857 (per 1901 census), d. 2 Sept. 1956 at West Vancouver, aged 98 years.[167] He m. 17 July 1895 in the New Westminster District, B.C.,[168] Annie Robson, b. 17 July 1877 in New Zealand (per 1901 census), possibly the Mary Anna Dean who d. 28 May 1952 at Vancouver, aged 76 years.[169] The identity of Cyrus Dean, son of Cyrus S. Dean, with the man who went to British Columbia, is indicated by the statements in DGT that he was born “ca. 1857” and married “Anna Robinson”; which is pretty close to the name given in their marriage record; furthermore, they named a son Cyrus S. Dean, doutbless for the child’s paternal grandfather, and this child was born at Fort Erie, his grandfather’s home. They are found in the 1901 census of Victoria, B.C., in which he is called an engineer.[170] Known issue:
    1. Doran Robson Dean, b. 19 Nov. 1896 at Victoria.[171] He m. 1 Aug. 1922 at Vancouver,[172] Evelyn Beatrice Jones.
    2. Cyrus Sumner Dean, probably b. 24 Sept. 1899 (per army record) at Fort Erie, Ontario, although his birthdate is given as 24 Sept. 1900 in the 1901 census. He enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 8 Feb. 1916 at Vancouver, giving his address as 1810 Cedar Street, his occupation as bugler, his marital status as single, his religion as Church of England, his age as 16 years and 4 months, his place of birth as Fort Erie, Ontario, and the name of his father as Cyrus Dean.[173] He m. 15 May 1926 at Vancouver,[174] Helen Aletha Hackman.
  3. Romane Dean, b. ca. 1859.
  4. George Dean.
  5. John Dean; m. Mary Young.
  6. Edward Dean. An “Edde H.M. Dean,” b. 31 March 1879, is found next door to Cyrus Dean, above, in the 1901 census of Victoria, B.C., in which he is called a farmer.[175] We have not found him in other records.
  7. Lillian Dean; said to have m. the Rev. ____ van Riperdead, although we cannot find her in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1887-1899.
  8. Ethel P.V. Dean; said to have m. 19 June 1895 in Bertie Tp.,[176] Arthur H. Parsell, whose surname is given in family records as Purcell.
  9. Oberia Dean; said to have m. ____ Brown, although we cannot find her in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1887-1899.

11. Aaron3 Dean,[177] son of David Dean and Cornelia Travis, was b. 11 Aug. 1834 in Clinton Tp., and d. 28 July 1892, possibly at Avenmore. He m. 16 Sept. 1855, Almeda Margaret Joice, b. 11 March 1839, d. 18 Feb. 1889 at Waterdown. Their marriage was witnessed by David Dean and Henry Orth. The 1861 census of Clinton Tp. calls him a miller. The 1881 census of the town of St. Catherines, Lincoln Co., calls him an engineer, and gives the family’s religion as Methodist.[178] Issue, per DGT (which does not trace any of the lines further, except that of their son John) and the researches of Susan (Rutherford) Bijakowski:

  1. Alice Maryetta Dean, b. 28 July 1856, d. 9 March 1911. She m. 8 July 1878 at Midcreek, Clinton Tp., her third cousin, George Peter Hansel, son of David Hansel, of St. Anns, by the latter’s wife Sarah Zimmerman; grandson of George Hansel (1789-1824) and Sarah Wilkinson, and great-grandson of Andreas Hansel and Maria Christina Flach (see our FLACH page). She and her husband, a farmer, are found in the household of his widowed father, of Clinton Tp., in 1881.[179] Two children:
    1. Beatrice Maud Hansel, b. 21 April 1881, d. (unmarried) in 1955 at Buffalo.
    2. Franklin George Hansel, b. 1896, d. in infancy.
  2. A. Emma Dean, b. 23 Jan. 1858, living unmarried with her parents in 1881. She later m. by 1883, William Fitch, although we have not found this couple in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1869-1886. Known issue, order uncertain:
    1. William Fitch, said to have been b. 29 April 1880 although this would surely have been before his parents’ marriage.
    2. Jennie Fitch, b. 1883; m. Orme Fairley.
    3. Howard Fitch.
    4. Eddie Fitch.
    5. John Fitch.
  3. Cornelia Dean, b. 14 May 1860, d. 27 Nov. 1908 at Jordan Station. She m. 14 May 1879 at Beamsville,[180] Henry Overholt, b. 14 Aug. 1854 at Jordan, Lincoln Co, son of Jacob Overholt and Hannah Fretz,[181] in whose household in Louth Tp., Lincoln Co., he and his wife, and their son Frederick, are found in 1881; Henry (a farmer) and his wife and child were Methodists although his parents were Mennonites.[182] Only known child:
    1. Francis Overholt, b. 29 Aug. 1880; he m. Sarah ____.
  4. Almeda Dean, b. 18 May 1862, d. 11 June 1924, and buried in Vineland Cemetery, Lincoln Co. Almeda (Dean) Fisher She m. 7 April 1891 at Hamilton, Ontario, by licence, Enos John Fisher, b. 1862-63 in Grismby Tp., d. 5 Aug. 1944 at Vineland Station, “in his 82nd year,” son of John Francis Fisher, of Grimsby, farmer, an immigrant from England, by the latter’s wife Maria Brydges. At the time of their marriage Almeda Dean was of Buffalo, and her husband was of North Grimsby Tp., Lincoln Co. Enos Fisher became a fruit-grower at Jordan Station, Ontario. Only child:
    1. Orlon John Fisher, b. 26 June 1892 in Grimsby Tp., d. 3 March 1960. He m. 24 June 1914 at or near Beamsville, Bessie May Servos, d. 1979. At the time of their marriage Orlon Fisher was of Vineland, and his wife of Caistor Centre, both in Lincoln Co. Only known child:
      1. John William Franklin Fisher, d. 1964. He m. Winnifred May Honsberger, b. 26 May 1925 (?), d. 1990.
        1. Patricia Edna Fisher, b. 1938, d. 2000; m. James Lyle MacDougall, d. 1994. Three children:
          1. James Lyle MacDougall, b. 1967; m. Lorie Louise Scott, b. 1965. Only child:
            1. Kyle Murry Scott MacDougall, b. 1998.
          2. Darlene May MacDougall, b. 1968; m. Kevin Murry Scott, b. 1967. Two children:
            1. Emily Jane Scott, b. 1997.
            2. Catrina May Scott, b. 1999.
          3. Louise Patricia MacDougall, b. 1969; unmarried.
        2. Dale Marie Fisher, b. 1944; m. Edmond Z. Bijakowski, b. 1941. Only child:
          1. Desmond Franklin Bijakowski, b. 1964; m. Susan Idra Rutherford, b. 1965, who is our source of information on this branch of the family. The have two children:
            1. Karli Olivia Bijakowski, b. 1999.
            2. Mitchell Franklin Bijakowski, b. 2002.
        3. William Keith Fisher, b. 1955; m. Paula Dawn Finnnie, b. 1959. Two children:
          1. Jessie David Fisher, b. 1982.
          2. Kendra Dawn Fisher, b. 1984.
  5. Estella Dean, b. 31 Aug. 1865, d. 24 March 1887 at Hamilton, Ontario. DGT states that she m. “____ Newman,” which inclines us to think she could have been mother of the Estella Nunan found in the household of her brother Seward in 1901. However, the records of Susan (Rutherford) Bijakowski state that Estella Dean m. Charles Herold, and had a son, Arthur Herold. We are presently unable to resolve the discrepancy, as there is no entry for an Estella Dean in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1869-1899.
  6. John Clifford Dean, b. 23 April 1868 in Clinton Tp., d. 26 Sept. 1938 at Tobermory, Bruce Co., Ontario. He m. 2 June 1890 at Owen Sound, Bruce Co., Ontario, Hannah Belle Martin, b. 16 April 1872, d. 15 March 1945 at Owen Sound, and buried at Tobermory, daughter of Henry Martin and Elspeth Slessor. They are found in the 1901 census of St. Edmunds Tp., Bruce Co.[183] Issue:
    1. Elsie Dean, b. 26 April 1891 (per family record) or 1892 (per 1901 census), d. 2 Nov. 1950, and buried at Tobermory; m. 20 Oct. 1909, Edward James Hopkins, son of John C. Hopkins and Ellen Cuff. They do not appear to have had issue.
    2. Ada Dean (twin to Ida), b. 15 Aug. 1893, d. by 1901.
    3. Ida Dean (twin to Ada), b. 15 Aug. 1893 at Hamilton, d. 11 Sept. 1947 at Walkerton, Ontario. She m. 17 Sept. 1918, Edwin Percival Belrose, b. 17 Nov. 1877 at Owen Sound, d. 20 Dec. 1940 at Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, son of Jacob Belrose. This couple, who lived in various places in Saskatchewan including Mendel (about 1919-1920), Craik (about 1921-1933), and Hudson Bay (1936-1940+), had 15 children.
    4. Roy Dean, b. 19 April 1896 in Ancaster Tp., Wentworth Co., d. 19 May 19__ at Owen Sound. He m. Emma Adair, b. 16 Nov. 1899 in Greenock Tp., Bruce Co. Issue:
      1. Eva May Dean, b. 8 June 1921, d. 3 June 1961. She m. 7 March 1941, John Hicks.
      2. Orville Elroy Dean, b. 7 Dec. 1924; m. 27 July 1946, Jennie Wilson.
      3. Shirley Joan Dean, b. 22 July 1932; m 18 Aug. 1951, R.J. Bell.
      4. Roy Henry Dean, b. 8 June 1934; m. 5 June 1954, Adeline Coture.
    5. Margaret (“Maggie”) Dean, b. 11 Feb. 1898 in Ancaster Tp., Wentworth Co., d. 6 Sept. 1966, and buried at Tobermory. She m. 1 Nov. 1918, William Oscar Smith, b. 3 Oct. 1897 at Owen Sound, son of William Smith and Helena May Belrose. They had two sons.
    6. Lillian Dean, b. 27 Oct. 1900 at Tobermory, d. 10 Jan. 1977 at Toronto, and buried at Tobermory. She m. William H. Barney, b. 29 Aug. 1912, son of Edward Barney and Annie Westlake. DGT states that she “lived in Weston, York Co., Ontario, in 1860,” which statement is obviously in error as to the date.
    7. Aaron Dean, b. 27 Sept. 1902 at Tobermory, d. 20 July 1978 at Owen Sound, and buried at Tobermory. He m. 10 Nov. 1935, Eileen Spears, b. 15 Aug. 1915 at Coquitlam, British Columbia, daughter of Thomas Spears and Mary Ellen Bartman. They had six children.
    8. Daisy Dean, b. 21 Jan. 1905; m. before 1924, Gordon Hopkins, b. 15 July 1901 at Tobermory, d. there 1 Jan. 19__, son of William Henry Hopkins and Ruth Matheson. They had four children.
    9. Henry Dean, b. 6 March 1907, d. (unmarried) 18 Nov. 1922.
    10. Seward Bruce Dean, b. 15 March 1909, d. 11 Oct. 1963, and buried at Tobermory. He m. by 1939, Lillian Martin, b. 14 Sept. 1916 at London, England, daughter of Arthur Martin and Bessie Royle. Issue:
      1. Peggie Caroline Dean, b. 9 Dec. 1939 at Lion’s Head, Bruce Co.; m. 6 March 1959, Kent Teeple. She was late Peggy (Dean) Teeple referred to above.
      2. William Bruce Dean, b. 22 Dec. 1941 at Toronto; m. 8 May 1965, Freda Adams.
    11. Mildred Dean, b. 14 March 1911 at Tobermory; m. 3 Nov. 1933 at Tobermory, Roy Hatt, b. 15 Feb 1911 at Lion’s Head, Bruce Co., d. 5 April 1972 at Tobermory. They had five children.
    12. Orlon Alvin Dean, b. 28 June 1913 at Tobermory, d. there 25 Oct. 1973, and buried there. He m. before 1937, Velma Smith, b. 14 Sept. 1917 at Tobermory, daughter of Adelbert Huston Smith and Julia May Spears. They had six children.
  7. Bertha Dean, b. 26 Nov. 1871, d. (probably unmarried) 18 July 1891 at Buffalo. DGT states rather uncertainly that she m. “____ Seward,” but adds, “the source is unclear; a Seward Dean may have been a brother of Bertha.” In view of the fact that Bertha did indeed have such a brother, we believe that the suggested marriage should be disregarded, particularly as no such marriage appears in the Ontario Marriage Index, 1887-1899.
  8. Seward A. Dean, b. 12 Oct. 1874; m. shortly before 31 May 1900,[184] Elizabeth Page, b. 25 Dec. 1874. They are found in the 1901 census of Nelson Tp., Halton Co.; also in their household was a “niece,” Estella Nunan, b. 14 Dec. 1883.[185] Known issue:
    1. John (“Jack”) Francis Dean, b. 2 Oct. 1901.
    2. Alfretta Dean, b. 28 April 1906 at Waterdown; m. ____ Hatt.
    3. Jennie Dean, b. 28 Jan. 1905 at Waterdown; m. ____ Spratt.
    4. Jessie Dean, b. 17 March 1901; m. Russell Lye.

12. William3 Dean,[186] son of Andrew Dean and Mary Mingle, was b. probably 2 June 1823,[187] and d. 12 May 1914 at his residence in Windham Tp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, aged 90 years, 11 months, 10 days. He m. 24 June 1859 in Erin Tp., Wellington Co., by Methodist Episcopal rites,[188] Mary Ann Harley, b. 15 April 1839 (per family bible), d. 6 Nov. 1893 in Windham Tp., daughter of Thomas Harley, of Esquesing, by the latter’s wife Margaret Eleanor Barnes.[189] At the time of their marriage the groom was of Gainsborough Tp., Lincoln Co., and the bride of Esquesing Tp., Halton Co; there was apparently only one witness to the wedding, an Andrew Dean. They are listed with their eldest child in the 1861 census of Gainsborough Tp. They had however removed to Windham Tp., Norfolk Co., by 1881, when the census of that year calls William Dean a farmer and gives the famly’s religion as Presbyterian.[190] The widowed William Dean is found with two sons and his sister Ann in the 1901 census of Windham Tp.[191] Known issue:[192]

  1. Helen (“Nellie”) Dean, b. 8 April 1860, still living unmarried with her parents in 1881, when she was a servant. She m. 23 May 1885 (per the family bible record), Elmer Birdsell.
  2. John Salem Dean, b. 20 Nov. 1861, d. 1953. He was a servant in 1881, served as a witness at the marriage of his younger sister Emroy in 1888, and was still living unmarried with his widowed father in 1901. We have not found a marriage for him, and we have not found him in the 1911 census.
  3. Andrew Dean, b. 25 May 1863, d. 22 March 1881 (per the family bible). We have not found a marriage for him.
  4. Emroy Dean (female), b. 19 Aug. 1865 in Charlotteville Tp., Norfolk Co., d. 28 March 1942, and buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Waterford. She m. 29 Feb. 1888 in Waterford Tp., Norfolk Co.,[193] Thomas E. Kitchen, of Round Plains, b. 1864-65 (aged 24 in 1889) in Windham Tp., son of Aaron and Sarah Ann (____) Kitchen. At the time of their marriage, the record of which supplies the names of both sets of parents, both parties were residing in Windham Tp., and the groom was a blacksmith; the witnesses were Salem Dean and Mary Dayfoe (sic), both of Windham Tp.
  5. Calvin James Dean, b. 15 June 1867, living 1881. We have not found a marriage for him, nor have we found him in the 1901 census.
  6. George Secord Dean, b. 6 Feb. 1869 at Charlotteville, Norfolk Co. (per marriage record), d. 1949 at Fort William. He m. 20 Sept. 1898 in the Thunder Bay District,[194] Margaret J. Mapledoram, b. 1872-73 (aged 25 in 1898) at Wyandotte, Michigan (per marriage record), daughter of William C. Mapledoram and Agnes ____. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents without however supplying the maiden surnames of the mothers, the groom was a millman, of Rat Portage, and the bride was of Fort William. They were the ancestors of Gary Dean, of Thunder Bay. They had at least the following children:
    1. Agnes Evelyn Dean, b. 18 Sept. 1899 in the Rainy River District.[195]
    2. Ernest Harley Dean, b. 27 April 1901 in the Algoma District.[196]
    3. Cybil Andette Dean, b. 9 June 1903 in the Thunder Bay District.[197]
    4. George E. Dean (position uncertain).
  7. David McCall Dean, b. 26 March 1871 (per damily bible and 1901 census), living 1898. He m. 22 June 1898 in Bruce County,[198] Margaret Ann Wheeler, b. 15 June 1875 (per 1901 census) in Ontario, daughter of William Wheeler and Ann ____. At the time of their marriage, the record of which names both sets of parents without however supplying the maiden surnames of the mothers, the groom was a fireman, of Canmore, North West Territories (now Alberta), and the bride was a dressmaker, of Lion’s Head, Ontario. They are found at Calgary, Alberta, in the 1901 census, in which he is called an engineer, and the family’s religion given as Baptist.[199] They are found at Place of Habitation: 1538 Garnet Street, Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1911, when he was working in some capacity for the C.N.R. (Canadian National Railway).[200] Known issue:
    1. Hazel Dean, b. 19 Aug. 1901 (per 1901 census) in Alberta.
    2. Dora Dean, b. 1903 (?) (aged 7 in 1911).
    3. Elmetta Dean, b. 1906 (?) (aged 5 in 1911).
  8. Palmer Dean, b. 3 March 1875 (per family bible) or 3 March 1878 (per 1901 census) in Ontario, living 1901. He is found at Revelstoke, British Columbia, in the 1901 census, at which time he was a locomotive fireman, Presbyterian in religion, and still unmarried; he was lodging with a group of persons with no relationship to one another.[201] We have not found him in the 1906 or 1911 censuses.
  9. William Dean, Jr., b. 6 Aug. 1879. We have not found a marriage for him.
  10. Frederick Marcus Dean, b. 31 May 1880. We have not found a marriage for him.
  11. Ernest Harley Dean, b. 26 March 1884 at Windham Centre, still living unmarried with his widowed father in 1901. He appears at no. 120-2 South Brodie Street, Fort William, in the 1911 census, at which time he was a fire-engine captain, and was still single.[202] We have not found a marriage for him.

3DGT gives the month and year but not the precise date, for which we are indebted to Ms. Marietta Pickell; recently we found a transcription of the Marriage Records of the Zion Lutheran Church at Oldwick, from Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, 40 (1965):10 ff., available online at http://members.aol.com/njdata/oldwick.html. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is the oldest surviving Lutheran congregation in New Jersey.
4Based on her age at death as given in the bible record. The calculations in DGT, which we are quite certain are based on this record, say 16 March on p. 1 and 15/17 March on p. 28, and are consequently incorrect.

Young, James
The first 152 volumes of the Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Books show no competing identification of this Private John Dean.
6DGT, p. 1. Fox Hill is shown only on large-scale maps. Its position is 40° 52' 39'' N, 74° 26' 40'' W. New Jersey: A guide to its present and past (New York, 1939), p. 433, refers to it as “Hell Mountain or Fox Hill (altitude 957'), a haven for buzzards and foxes.”

The database New Jersey Census, 1772-1890 by Accelerated Indexing Systems, available online by subscription to Ancestry.com, claims the existence of a 1793 “June Tax list” mentioning a John Dean in Roxbury Tp.; this seems unlikely to be a different list.

12These five children were: Matthias, b. 2 Oct. 1772; Aaron, b. 22 Oct. 1774; William, b. 7 Feb. 1776; Mary, b. 9 June 1778; and Daniel, b. 23 Dec. 1781. See LDS patrons’ submission records, batch 7132328, sheets 42-3, on microfilm no. 539,007. John Littell, Family records of genealogies of the first settlers of Passaic Valley and [the] vicinity above Chatham (1851), seemingly refers to several of these children; see pp. 182 (for Matthias), 368 (for Aaron), and 419 (for William).
13Chambers, op. cit., mentions others of this name, including:
  • Aaron Dean, who m. Grietie (van der) Vliet (1750-), daughter of John Vliet by the latter’s wife Grietie Wyckoff (p. 544);
  • “Catherine Dean, daughter of John ?,” who m. Gilbert Bodine (1761-1838), of Chester Tp., Morris Co. (p. 269).
A Jonathan Dean m. 2 June 1797 in Morris Co. (LDS Vital Records Index), Esther Fairchild, who is treated in J. Percy Crayon, Rockaway Records of Morris County, N.J. Families (Rockaway, N.J., 1902); perhaps Jonathan was the one of this name who was later a member of Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church.

19See DGT, p. 24 (where her dates are wrong) and p. 29 (where she was included in a list of unplaced Deans). An article from an unidentified newspaper, furnished by Corlene Taylor, identifies her as a twin sister of Philip Dean, although we await confirmation of this in New Jersey sources.

35William Havens, Jr., was a son of William Havens, Sr. (1738-1800), U.E.L., as stated in Annals of the Forty, 5:37. However, in its discussion of the earlier Havens ancestry, this work makes somewhat naïve use of an obviously modern commemorative plaque, which implies that the Canadian immigrant was a grandson of John Havens, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Navesink, New Jersey. The man of Portsmouth was fathering children before the mid-1670s, and the chronological unlikelihood of such a connection had been pointed out some years before in Henry C. Havens, The Havens family in New Jersey (Trenton, N.J., 1933), 26-27.

88This family is represented incorrectly in DGT, p. 24, where the daughter Mary is erroneously called Sarah, and the daughter Rachael is erroneously called Mary. It would appear that the Bottings, in transcribing the evidence of the 1861 census, inadvertently duplicated the mother’s name of Sarah for the daughter Mary and moved Mary’s name down a row, eliminating the second daughter Rachael.
